Underwriter

Stand, San Francisco, CA, United States

About the Team We are a team of technologists and insurance industry veterans from companies like SpaceX, Boeing, Metromile, Policygenius, HotelTonight, WePay, Chubb, Pure, and AIG Private Client.

Overview Stand is reimagining high‑net‑worth personal lines insurance for a world where the old playbook doesn’t work. Climate risk is escalating, client expectations are rising, and legacy carriers are retreating or stuck in out‑dated workflows. We combine deep underwriting judgment with modern technology to protect what matters most to our clients.

Location San Francisco and Seattle

Employment Type Full time, On‑site

Department Insurance

The Role You’ll be executing our underwriting strategy for a high‑net‑worth personal lines book—complex homes, unique exposures, CAT risks that make other carriers nervous. You’ll work directly with brokers and our marketing, mitigation, and engineering teams to evaluate risks others won’t touch, structure creative terms, and deliver an experience that makes us the easiest carrier to work with.

Hands‑on underwriting with real autonomy. You’ll own your book, make decisive calls on complex submissions, and help shape how we leverage technology to get better at the craft without losing the human judgment that matters.

What You’ll Own

Become the underwriter brokers call when they have a challenge—CAT‑exposed properties, unique collections, non‑standard liability exposures.

Develop creative, solution‑oriented approaches that balance client needs with sound risk selection.

Grow your assigned book to premium and policy targets while maintaining strict risk quality standards.

Cut quote‑to‑bind time through decisive communication and clear workflows. Hit a 22%+ bind‑to‑quote ratio.

Adopt and help refine our underwriting tools and platforms, identifying repeatable tasks to systematize.

What Makes You Great at This

Deeply curious about people, assets, and emerging risks.

Creative in solving non‑standard risks with bespoke terms and layered structures without sacrificing profitability.

Broker‑obsessed, communicating clearly and explaining the “why” behind your decisions.

Tech‑inclined and naturally ask “Can we systematize this?” when you see repeatable tasks.

Execute with ownership, making timely decisions on complex submissions.

What You Bring

4 years minimum of underwriting experience in personal lines, preferably HNW or complex property risks.

Strong understanding of property valuations and liability exposures.

Track record of managing a profitable book while delivering excellent broker service.

Comfort with technology and willingness to adapt to new platforms and tools.

CPCU, AU, or similar designation (or in progress) preferred.

Compensation Annual base salary range: $125,000 to $175,000 plus bonus and meaningful equity grant. Compensation decisions are dependent on qualifications, location, internal equity, and market data.

Benefits include:

Above‑market Health, Dental, and Vision coverage

Weekly lunch stipend

Flexible time off + holidays

401(k) plan

Short‑term and long‑term disability

Monthly team gatherings
