
Tax Senior Manager, ASC740 & Corporate Tax

Job Summary
The Core Tax Services ("CTS") Senior Manager - ASC740 is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex corporate tax and ASC 740 tax issues. In this role, the Senior Manager will apply knowledge to understand potential tax issues, recognize and communicate potential risks and changes in tax policy, and may be asked to provide written tax advice to clients. The Senior Manager will also be involved in marketing, networking and business development within an area of expertise and specialization.
Job Duties
Tax Compliance
Ensure clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing their tax and reporting burdens, and ensure self and client service teams comply with all Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM).
Conduct top‑level review of tax return preparation and resolve all tax issues with clients, involving specialists where appropriate.
Communicate with clients and Assurance about issues identified in tax accrual reviews.
Plan and review the tax process and procedures, including budgeting and staffing, monitoring engagement process and actual time incurred versus budget, timely billing, and timely collection of accounts receivable.
Manage client relationships and expectations in accordance with the project.
Provide timely advice to clients.
Research
Identify when research is needed, frame issues clearly, and report analysis concisely.
Identify complex issues for the engagement team and provide research methodology.
Train managers and staff on research skills and appropriate framing of ASC 740 tax issues.
Involve firm specialists, as appropriate.
ASC 740 (fka FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals
Apply Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM) regarding ASC 740.
Explain and discuss components of the income tax provision and uncertain tax positions to clients and other stakeholders.
Communicate with Assurance team to plan tax accrual reviews, including budget, scope and delivery dates.
Review tax provisions and apply in‑depth knowledge of ASC 740.
Review prepared workpapers.
Utilize and manage Specialized Tax Services (STS) as needed.
Tax Consulting
Assist with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing client taxes.
Consider applicability of CTS and STS consulting specialties for each client.
Develop and implement a work plan to include/organize STS assistance on ongoing projects.
Serve as a technical resource.
Ensure client service teams comply with Firm policy regarding Written Tax Advice (WTA).
Provide assistance with exam support.
Frame projects and issues for effective delegation to seniors and associates.
Tax Specialization
Develop an in‑depth understanding of technical and practical issues in areas such as individual, corporate, property, sales, pass‑through, state and local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, compensation and benefits, accounting methods, and R&D tax benefits.
May be required to organize and conduct internal CPE training sessions in area of specialization, involving Firm specialists.
May train and mentor managers, seniors and associates on ASC 740.
Strategy Development
Introduce and develop new or improved ideas to improve clients’ positions, the Firm, or personnel, e.g., by reducing taxes or expenses or providing non‑tax benefits.
Consistently suggest improvements to previous work products or approaches.
May lead marketing campaigns, if applicable to role.
Present complex strategies to clients and prospective clients.
Collaborate with the Firm’s National Tax and Specialized Tax Services to deliver high‑quality deliverables and analyses on ASC 740.
Other duties as required
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise associates and senior associates on all projects.
Review work prepared by associates and senior associates and provide review comments.
Train associates and seniors on how to use all current software tools.
Act as a career advisor to associates and senior associates.
Schedule and manage workload of associates and senior associates.
Provide verbal and written performance feedback to associates and senior associates.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Education
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Taxation, required.
Master’s degree in Accounting or Taxation, preferred.
Experience
Eight (8) or more years of prior experience, required.
Experience managing the process of preparing and auditing ASC 740 computations for privately held and/or publicly traded clients, required.
Prior supervisory experience, required.
Multinational client experience, preferred.
License/Certifications
CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or IRS Enrolled Agent (EA) or equivalent, required.
Software
Experience with Microsoft Office Tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook), and Adobe Acrobat, preferred.
Experience with tax research databases such as BNA and RIA, proficiency in all tax compliance process software including GoFileRoom, GoSystemRS, Caseware, BNA Depreciation Software, or comparable programs and standard tax workpapers, preferred.
