Assistant Director, Radiation and Laser Safety (Radiation Safety Officer)

Reports to: Assistant Vice Chancellor for EHSS
Position Overview Vanderbilt University is seeking a strategic and visionary Assistant Director of Radiation and Laser Safety (RLS) to serve as the university’s Radiation Safety Officer (RSO). This pivotal leadership role is responsible for the design, implementation, and oversight of a comprehensive safety program that protects our diverse research community, the environment, and university property.
As a key leader within EHSS, you will drive the transition of clinical and research safety activities and ensure the university remains at the forefront of regulatory compliance and innovative safety informatics.
Primary Responsibilities
Serve as the university’s Radiation Safety Officer, providing tactical direction for the RLS program across all teaching and research missions.
Act as the primary liaison with federal, state, and local agencies. Ensure 100% compliance with all applicable laws and oversee the integration of VUMC’s Office of Clinical and Research Safety activities.
Design and lead high-impact employee training programs focused on RLS behaviors, compliance, and risk mitigation.
Oversee rigorous RLS audits and inspections, developing and executing robust remediation plans when necessary.
Represent the department on critical university bodies, including the Radiation Safety Committee, Workplace Safety Committee, and Emergency Management Operations.
Champion the use of safety informatics, metrics, and instructional technology to drive organizational efficiency and modernize safety protocols.
Minimum Requirements
Master’s Degree in Health Physics, Environmental Health, or a related scientific field.
Must be a Certified Health Physicist (CHP) or a National Registry of Radiation Protection Technician (NRRPT).
8+ years of progressive leadership experience in Radiation Safety management.
Unrestricted authorization to work in the U.S. and ability to commute to our Nashville, TN campus daily.
Preferred Qualifications
12+ years of experience in Radiation Safety management, preferably within a complex research or academic medical environment.
Proven track record of managing large-scale regulatory transitions or organizational change.
Advanced proficiency in safety software, databases, and data-driven decision-making.
