The CTL supports the university’s core educational mission by helping faculty, lecturers, and Teaching Assistants design, teach, and improve courses and curricula, and by providing academic coaching, tutoring, language practice, and support for diverse learners. The Associate Director, Faculty and Lecturer Programs, is a member of the instructor-facing team in CTL. The role supports implementation of evidence-based pedagogical practices for undergraduate and graduate education at Stanford. Reporting to the Director of Academic Teaching Programs, the Associate Director uses established and cutting-edge research to advance teaching practices and impact the learning experiences of Stanford students. The role designs, delivers, and assesses pedagogical programming for Stanford faculty and lecturers, including leading core CTL programs, coordinating staff, conducting consultations and feedback processes, developing teaching resources, and facilitating customized development experiences for instructors. The position also contributes to strategy and long-range planning for pedagogical programming and may take on special projects related to teaching at Stanford. In This Role, You Will
Support individual instructors with research-based recommendations and guidance in collecting student feedback to inform effective course design and teaching practice Respond to 1:1 consultation requests from individuals or groups such as programs or departments Collaborate with instructors or departments to develop course or program curricula in Stanford undergraduate and graduate programs Collaborate with instructors to collect feedback from students at mid-quarter or end-quarter to inform course changes Design, deliver, and assess workshops and other offerings upon request from departments and other campus units or as part of university initiatives Assume primary vision, program management, budget responsibility, and oversight for one or more selected major faculty/lecturer program(s) Collaborate with CTL staff and University stakeholders to integrate technology and instructional design into CTL offerings and resources Create evidence-based teaching and learning resources for campus use to guide pedagogy and amplify CTL’s services (e.g., via the Stanford Teaching Commons) Act as a liaison between departments/programs/campus collaborators and CTL Contribute newsletter items and collaborate with CTL, VPUE, and VPGE communication staff to publicize programs and services Conduct literature reviews for specific teaching topics Collaborate with CTL staff and VPUE Assessment and Evaluation colleagues to determine evaluation strategies for programmatic offerings, including data collection and reporting May work extended hours, evenings or weekends; may travel locally; occasional overnight travel Understand physical requirements: stand/walk, sit, manipulate with fine motor skills, perform desk-based computer tasks; in-person mobility on campus To Be Successful In This Role, You Will Bring
Bachelor’s degree, advanced degree (Master’s, Ph.D., or Ed.D.), and at least two years of relevant experience Two or more years of teaching experience as a primary instructor responsible for course design and delivery Facility with current technologies that support teaching and learning Ability to oversee and direct staff Demonstrated ability to collaborate constructively, inclusively, and equitably with campus stakeholders Ability to work independently and in teams and take initiative in new ventures or pilot projects Strong written and oral communication skills and proactive progress reporting Excellent analytical and organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and complex projects Commitment to iterative, collaborative improvement and lifelong learning in pedagogy Fluency in terminology, research, and recommendations around effective and inclusive pedagogy Attention to detail and accuracy In Addition, Preferred Requirements Include
Degree or experience in the Social Sciences or STEM Education, with familiarity with qualitative and quantitative methods Evidence of applying research and teaching experience to assess needs and develop recommendations for instructors at a research university Experience with learning technologies (videoconferencing, polling software, live inking/annotation, LMS, and generative AI in teaching) 2-3 years of experience in educational or teaching development in higher education Experience managing a budget and developing financial plans Additional Information
