AVP, Underwriter – U.S. Environmental Insurance
Sompo offers a unique opportunity for an AVP, Underwriter in the U.S. Environmental Insurance team. The role can be based out of our Denver, CO; Los Angeles, CA; or Irvine, CA offices.
Responsibilities
Underwrite both renewal and new business Environmental Pollution and Casualty accounts within your territory.
Build and manage partnerships with agents, brokers, and other distribution partners to maintain a strong pipeline of opportunities supporting profitable growth.
Underwrite within your authority level and established guidelines while partnering across functions to deliver strong portfolio performance.
Meet stated financial objectives for growth and profitability for the Environmental elements of the Specialty portfolio.
Create and maintain relationships to showcase Sompo’s products and capabilities beyond underwriting, including market trends, audits, and claims; represent Sompo through on‑site visits, industry conferences, and other engagements.
Review and resolve premium audit issues.
Utilize underwriting standards, practices, and tools to determine accurate classifications, rates, and premium charges.
Review applicable laws and regulations, including cancellation and non‑renewal protocols, in assigned locations.
Perform and/or oversee risk analysis (exposure, aggregation, scenario testing, and profitability) using internal models and market data.
Support internal and external audits; identify control gaps and drive remediation actions where needed.
Partner with Claims, Actuarial, Cat/Exposure Management, Finance, and Operations to support underwriting outcomes and portfolio health.
What You’ll Need
7+ years of casualty or environmental underwriting experience.
Familiarity with required forms and coverages.
Knowledge of relevant laws associated with U.S. Environmental underwriting coverages.
Experience underwriting non‑admitted lines of coverage, and working with wholesale and retail brokers/agents.
Ability to travel as needed.
Experience negotiating and engaging in the negotiation process.
Adept at risk selection, exposure evaluation, and ability to rate, quote, and sell admitted and non‑admitted solutions.
Excellent organizational skills.
Very strong analytical, oral, and written communication skills required.
Ability to meet tight deadlines and provide strong customer service with a professional attitude.
Ability to interact and communicate with various levels of the organization to cross‑sell or address processing requirements.
Demonstrated contribution to underwriting profit.
Proficient in associated computer programs, including Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
Salary $140,000.00 – $185,000.00. Actual compensation depends on factors such as cost of living, qualifications, skills, and experience.
