Position Overview We are seeking a Consumer Loan Underwriter III to join Kirtland Credit Union. This role is located on-site at the Albuquerque Home Loan Center and may transition to hybrid work in the future based on business needs and managerial discretion.

Responsibilities Review and underwrite all consumer loans generated through direct, remote, and indirect channels. Follow established procedures, policies, and guidelines for underwriting, verification, and quality control. Work closely with loan origination staff, members, and dealerships as required. Ensure lending operations comply with policies, procedures, and legal requirements, achieving appropriate profit margins and minimal delinquency ratios. Support the Credit Union’s mission, vision, strategic objectives, and service standards. Provide exceptional member service.

Primary Job Duties

Implement policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Assist the VP of Consumer Loans in developing short- and long-term efficiencies for the department.

Apply proper risk management, fair lending, and regulatory compliance to meet Credit Union credit policy for all credit decisions.

Assist with periodic reviews of existing systems and procedures to ensure maximum efficiency and legal compliance.

Execute established operational goals and ensure corporate-wide objectives are supported.

Assume responsibility for the effective and efficient completion of consumer loan functions.

Maintain awareness of policy by reading and evaluating guideline updates, policy changes, and product changes.

Ensure lending functions are completed in accordance with policies, procedures, and related legal requirements.

Maintain relationships with loan sales staff to obtain information, present data, or explain policy or procedures and serve as a resource on underwriting questions.

Underwrite complex direct consumer loans and indirect auto loan requests.

Analyze applicant’s credit data, financial status, or financial statements to determine risk.

Maintain professional business relations with members, vendors, and trade professionals.

Maintain effective communication, coordination, and working relations with Credit Union personnel and management.

Assume responsibility for related duties as required or assigned.

Education / Certification

Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Experience Required

Minimum two years of prior lending/underwriting experience within a financial institution or related field, or more than two years of underwriting experience preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Proficient knowledge of consumer lending policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.

Proficient with retail installment contracts.

Proficient understanding of government regulations and legal requirements involving consumer lending and related functions.

Strong analytical skills to calculate lending ratios, conduct loan risk analysis, and identify credit issues, fraud, and related risks.

Ability to provide viable and creative loan alternatives within risk tolerance.

Experience with finance computations, lending calculators, and general consumer loan applications.

Comprehensive understanding of loan contracts including APR, amortization schedules, and simple-interest calculations.

Knowledgeable in credit union lending policy and regulations including Regulation B, Regulation Z, Fair Lending, and the Equal Credit Opportunity Act.

Ability to balance productivity and speed to meet service levels while maintaining quality underwriting.

Strong interpersonal skills (oral and written communication, active listening, positive attitude).

Ability to function in a team environment as a proven team player.

Proficiency with PC applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and willingness to learn new software programs as required.
