As an Assistant Superintendent working under Director of Agronomy, you will play a crucial role in the management and maintenance of the golf course or grounds. You will assist in planning and implementing turf care programs, irrigation systems management, pest control, and equipment maintenance. Working with all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the golf course. This position works in all facets of golf course turf management including working with Task tracker or similar system
Your responsibilities will also include scheduling and supervising grounds staff, ensuring course aesthetics meet the set standards, and promoting efficient resource management. This role demands a strong understanding of turfgrass management, irrigation systems, and pest control practices. You will need to be organized. Good communication skills are essential as you will collaborate with the team, vendors, and golf course members.
The ideal candidate possesses a practical knowledge base in the following areas: maintenance of a golf course landscape - greens, tees, and fairways; the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers, herbicides and pest control methods; drainage control methods; and irrigation systems including pumps and automatic controls.
Key Responsibilities – Skills, Aptitude, and Knowledge
Supervise maintenance work and staff to achieve the most efficient utilization of workers and equipment while being accountable for the finished results of work
Coordinate the planning, scheduling, and implementation of maintenance practices and projects
Apply fertilizers and plant protectants, including calibrating sprayers and spreaders; record all applications and ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations
Perform irrigation scheduling and make basic irrigation repairs
Perform basic mowing tasks and cultural practices when needed
Safely operate golf course equipment including but not limited to carts, mowers, rollers, rakes, loaders, automobiles, etc.
Maintain awareness of changing course conditions, recognize problems, and communicate maintenance needs
Assist in planning and execution of all golf course maintenance operations
Supervise and train maintenance staff; assign daily tasks and ensure quality control
Participate in and oversee: Mowing and course setup, Fertility and chemical applications, Irrigation scheduling and water management
Ensure proper and safe application of pesticides and fertilizers
Assist in monitoring turf health and identify pest, disease, and environmental stress issues
Qualifications
Valid Driver's License
Preferred Two-year certificate, associate degree or bachelor's degree in Turf Grass Management or related field preferred
3–5 years of golf course maintenance experience preferred
Previous supervisory or crew leadership experience strongly preferred
Working knowledge of warm season turfgrass management
Florida Restricted Use Pesticide (RUP) License or ability to obtain within 90 days
