Civitan International is a global organization of volunteer service clubs dedicated to helping people in their own communities. A program of Civitan International is Junior Civitan, which is designed for middle to high school students. The organization's mission is to build good citizenship by serving individual and community needs, with a special emphasis on supporting people with developmental disabilities—reflected in projects like building inclusive playgrounds and creating opportunities that enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities. Recognizing that needs vary worldwide, our members step in wherever help is needed, from collecting food for homeless shelters to volunteering in retirement homes. Summary of Position The Junior Civitan Membership and Fundraising Specialist will support members who are part of a Junior Civitan Club in middle school, junior high, high schools, colleges and communities across the world as guided by the program’s policies and strategic plan. This position will also assist in the fundraising, sponsorship and grant writing processes to support the program.
Job Location The organization and position are headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, with a hybrid/in‑office schedule.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Staff liaison to the Junior Civitan International Board of Directors, the program’s adult advisors, school teachers, chairs and other volunteer leaders, which includes:
Assisting Civitan Clubs and volunteers to organize new Junior Civitan Clubs
Produce an orientation session for any new board members
Planning Junior Civitan International Board meetings; guiding and advising the Junior Civitan International Board before and during board meetings
Taking board minutes during each meeting and disseminating as necessary following each meeting
Assisting the Junior Civitan International President in delegating tasks to board members and overseeing their completion
Creating content and programming for various leaders, planning and executing related training programs throughout the year
Create content for social media and websites, work with Director of Communications and Marketing to develop a communications and marketing plan for the Junior Civitan program and its efforts, which would include developing and utilizing content for:
Civitan Magazines and Newsletters
Junior Civitan social media platforms and groups
All In Summit Youth Conference
Develop a strategic plan and carry out the task items related to:
Expanding the program into areas where it doesn’t exist
Retaining and strengthening the program in areas where it does exist
Creating new ways the program can keep the brand alive and contribute to the overall success of Civitan International
Develop and maintain resources for the program and its leaders to utilize including:
Keep current resources up to date by making necessary edits in accordance with the state of the program
Process membership dues, fundraising revenue and payments, maintain financial and membership records for this program
Plan, expand and execute the annual All In Summit youth leadership conference, including theme creation, activities, negotiation with locations, activities and vendors
Plan, expand and execute the annual Junior Civitan convention.
Facilitate Scholarship programs through promotion, oversee judging process and committee and distribution to colleges and universities
Preparing new club charter supplies, sending congratulatory letters, processing charter money for new clubs
Facilitate the awards program within Junior Civitan and other recognition as needed
Manage the Campus Civitan program of Civitan International for Colleges and Universities
Maintain the program’s governance documents including presenting any amendments to the Junior Civitan International Board
Help fund the Junior Civitan program through fundraising events, corporate sponsorships and grants by assembling necessary documents, budgets and providing statistics and stories for submittals, submit sponsorship and grant proposals and coordinate additional opportunities with external grant writer, organize fundraising campaigns and events
Facilitate workshops at various Civitan functions (including the adult conventions and meetings)
Work with other team members at Civitan to further the mission of the entire organization
And, other various tasks related to the success of the Junior Civitan program and other programs of Civitan
Qualifications for this position include
A bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, business, education or any non‑profit related major and/or two years relevant experience in non‑profit work
Some event planning experience, whether professional or volunteer
Some sponsorship and grant writing and/or fundraising experience, whether professional or volunteer
Some volunteer management experience, whether professional or volunteer
The ability to take initiative but also ask for help when needed
Well‑developed written and verbal skills
Strong interpersonal manner, outgoing and positive demeanor
The ability to see the big picture, but be detail driven
The ability to travel when needed
Represent the organization in a professional and positive manner
Strong social media and computer skills, experience with Membersuite products a plus
Ability to lift at least 25 pounds
Civitan International is an equal opportunity employer. Hours are full‑time (32 to 40) hours week, hybrid in‑office/remote, Monday through Friday but there are work events on some weekends.
