The Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD) announces a new position within our Substance Use Prevention Program for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. This role will provide outreach and training throughout the State of Illinois to Deaf and Hard of Hearing youth in grades 6-12 on substance use prevention strategies. Responsibilities include developing presentations, creating reports and tracking data, and representing MOPD at community outreach events.

Develops training materials and facilitates presentations on substance use prevention strategies for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing youth in grades 6-12 through the State of Illinois.

Proactively conducts outreach to
Deaf and Hard of Hearing programs in Illinois to identify opportunities to present on substance use prevention strategies.
*
Prepares
handouts
to use in trainings and outreach to share with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community, as well as the greater disability community.
*
Maintains
records
and
prepares
reports
on
community
outreach
and
training/
presentation
activities.
*
Conducts research on topics related to substance use prevention for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing population, as well as other disability-related topics.
*
Promotes MOPD programs and services on social media and newsletter communications.
*
Attend
community
meetings, resource fairs, expos, and events to inform residents of MOPD services, as well as discuss
community
concerns and receive requests for City services and programs identified as a need by the disability community.
*
Assists
in
coordinating
MOPD
community
meetings
and
events.
*
Plans, prepares, and delivers lessons in ASL (beginner to advanced levels).
*
Promotes awareness of Deaf culture, accessibility, and language equity.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in the social sciences or a directly related field, plus two (2) years of community or social services experience Should the above criteria not be fulfilled, the following options are acceptable: *
Six (6) years of community or social services work experience *
Graduation from an accredited college with an associate's degree in the social sciences or a directly related field, plus four (4) years of community or social service work experience *
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master's degree or higher in the social sciences or a directly related field, plus one (1) year of community or social service work experience Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications
A valid State of Illinois driver's license is required Selection Criteria This position requires applicants to complete an interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the interview, will be selected. Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following: *
Fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) *
Previous professional or lived experience with people with disabilities including Deaf and Hard of Hearing *
Previous experience with curriculum development, education, training, and program evaluation *
Previous experience working with youth *
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
