Role Description
Access Press is seeking a versatile and community-minded assistant editor to join our team. This role is essential in delivering high-quality news and stories that resonate with the Minnesota disability community. The assistant editor will be responsible for generating compelling content for both our monthly print newspaper and our digital platforms. The ideal candidate is a skilled writer with a keen eye for detail, a passion for storytelling, is digitally savvy, and can manage multiple projects at a time.
Key Responsibilities
Article Writing: Research, interview, and write news stories, features, and profiles for the print newspaper and website.
Digital Updates: Assist in maintaining the Access Press website by posting articles, updating event calendars, and ensuring content is accessible.
Copy Editing: Review and edit other contributors’ submissions for clarity, grammar, and adherence to AP style.
Platform Growth: Manage and grow our presence on social media platforms.
Engagement: Create engaging posts and strategies that highlight current articles, community news, and legislative updates.
Qualifications
Required:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English, or a related field (Experience will be considered in lieu of a degree).
Writing Skills: Proven ability to write clear, concise, and engaging copy for different formats (print vs. web).
Reliability: Ability to meet deadlines and work independently in a part-time capacity.
Preferred (Nice-to-Have)
Community Knowledge: Familiarity with the disability community in Minnesota, including key organizations, legislative issues, or advocacy efforts.
Graphic Design: Experience with tools like Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or video editing software for creating social media graphics, newsletters, or videos.
Technical Skills: Familiarity with Content Management Systems (CMS) like WordPress.
