Graduation from an ABET-accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree or higher in an engineering or engineering technology program. Special Qualifications:

Applicants for this class must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license at the time of appointment in some positions. Overview

Under immediate supervision, the employee is responsible for professional environmental work of routine difficulty and performs related work as required. This entry‑level class is designed to lead to a reclassification to Environmental Protection Specialist 2* after successful completion of a mandatory one‑year training period. The employee may perform duties in various specialty areas such as air pollution, water resources, remediation, solid waste management, toxics, or underground storage tanks, and may also undertake mandatory inspections and evaluations under general supervision. Responsibilities

Under direct supervision, perform environmental inspections, complaint investigations, remediation, and monitoring work (e.g., sampling and evaluation of environmental media); conduct surveys and inspections of equipment, structures, materials, and sites to evaluate pollutant levels and ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and policies. Obtain, review, and analyze engineering designs, reports, plans, and specifications; verify calculations; assess routine technical information for adequacy and completeness and interpret findings to ensure compliance with established design criteria and standards. Perform or assist with research on regulatory information and studies of environmental pollution to develop or revise regulations, technical policies, SOPs, and to stay current with local, state, and federal standards. Prepare technical information and documents—records, drawings, reports, data, operational plans, enforcement action requests, permits, TMDL, correspondence, and soil evaluations—to support agency missions, and maintain appropriate data and documentation. Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and calibrate field and electronic equipment (flow meters, water samplers, phosphorization detectors, pH meters, GPS, etc.) to ensure proper functioning in accordance with manufacturer specifications and regulatory requirements. Aid in budget adherence by ensuring contractors’ work activities comply with rates and provide technical oversight for state and federal grant loan programs. Foster mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among staff and stakeholders through education on system operations, equipment, and programs designed to reduce environmental damage. Provide technical assistance to regulated operations, stakeholders, internal staff, and other personnel in response to environmental incidents and routine inquiries. Competencies
