What You Will Do
Packaging Specialist 1 or 2, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. The position involves ensuring safe and compliant packaging and transportation of all classes of Nuclear Material, other Hazardous Materials, and/or Classified Matter. Responsibilities include management, disposition, coordination, quality control, storage, and accountability functions for Nuclear Materials, Explosives, hazardous materials, and classified matter. The role requires a full understanding of applicable safety basis documentation including Documented Safety Requirements (DSAs), Technical Safety Requirements (TSRs), the Transportation Safety Document (TSD), Safety Analysis Reports for Packages (SARPs), and the Explosive Safety Manual. The Packaging Specialist 2 level expands to wide‑range Hazardous Materials Packaging and Transportation (HMPT) experience, creative problem solving, and independent work with guidance on accountability and control activities.
What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Regulations: Developing professional experience in hazardous material packaging and/or classified packaging and transportation (HMPT) regulations. Technical Experience: Working knowledge of LANL conduct of maintenance, engineering, operations, and QA programs as they apply to management, disposition, coordination, packaging, movement, storage, quality control, and/or transportation of Nuclear Material, Explosives, hazardous materials, and/or Classified Matter. Skills: Broad level understanding of hazardous material packaging and/or classified matter packaging and transportation (HMPT) regulations. Teamwork: Ability to interact effectively with all levels of personnel; building trust, gaining consensus, and resolving conflicts. Experience working in a team environment and independently managing multiple tasks concurrently. Communication: Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills. DOE Order 426.2A: Requires High School Diploma (or equivalent, i.e., GED). Education: Position requires a minimum of 2 years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Job Requirements For Packaging Specialist 2: Skills: Current or previous LANL Authorized Shipper qualification. Experience working in a nuclear high hazard facility. Knowledge of Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) for LANL and other applicable treatment, storage and disposal facilities (e.g., WIPP and NTS). Technical Experience: Experience working in a Nuclear High Hazard Facility. Demonstrated experience performing proper closure processes for packages containing hazardous material. Education: Position requires an Associate’s Degree and 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

WCATS trained and qualified
Knowledge of and/or experience performing programmatic operations at TA‑55
CMPC trained and qualified
