Advance Local, Port Reading, NJ, United States
News moves fast in New Jersey — and so do we.
NJ Advance Media
is seeking a sharp, motivated, and decisive
Managing Producer of News
to join one of the biggest and busiest teams in our newsroom.
You’ll be part of a dynamic group of managing producers who lead fast-paced, high-volume coverage of the stories people in New Jersey are talking about every day.
As a Managing Producer, you’ll oversee a team of reporters covering everything from major breaking news events to quick‑turn updates across a wide range of topics, from public safety and local news, to real estate and retail, to transportation and weather. You’ll be expected to move fast, jump on developments as they unfold and make quick calls on coverage priorities.
You’ll also play a role in developing reporters, spotting trends others miss, and ensuring our reporting goes beyond the headlines with deeper dives and follow‑ups.
This is an exciting opportunity for an editor who understands the nuances of New Jersey and knows what makes a great digital story.
The base salary range is $90,000 – $95,000 per year. This job requires reliable transportation to meet with sources or cover events.
For this position, we are looking for a candidate who will:
Work closely with early‑career reporters to help them develop
Craft headlines, thumbnails, and content with audience engagement in mind
Partner with other newsroom leaders, including those in video, social, trending, and AI innovation teams
Spot trends and opportunities for short and long‑term enterprise beyond the quick‑turn breaking news story
Encourage innovation and experimentation in a post‑print‑newspaper world
Thrive under pressure and be capable of prioritizing multiple demands
Demonstrate passion for the business of journalism and the evolving future of local news
The right candidate will have:
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience
A strong grasp of journalistic ethics, news structure, and compelling storytelling
Track record of mentoring and coaching reporters
Experience shaping coverage that performs across platforms and connects with a digital audience
Knowledge of best practices in digital publishing, including headlines, SEO, social media, and audience engagement
Familiarity with tools for content management, analytics, and social listening
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed
Deep understanding of New Jersey’s communities and issues is a strong plus
This role is a chance to help shape the future of news in New Jersey. You’ll be a key part of a newsroom committed to excellence, innovation, and impact — at a time when trusted, local journalism matters more than ever.
