Job Overview
We are looking for a Consultant in the Emerging Markets Implementation Team responsible for vetting, onboarding, and managing results and distribution relationships on emerging risk opportunities. This role reports to the Director of Program Underwriting in the Emerging Markets team.
Emerging Markets is a specialized department within the Alternative Risk & Emerging Markets organization focused on exploring emerging risks and unmet customer needs to generate new sources of revenue. The team builds and executes new products, risk‑transfer models, and distribution models to bring new revenue and learnings to Nationwide ESS.

Job Description Summary As a Consultant, you will review and analyze highly complex lines of business, underwrite individual risk for acceptability, pricing, coverage, terms, and conditions, and lead the development and integration of new and existing programs. You will identify new program opportunities, participate in reinsurance decisions, and develop and implement loss control and risk‑management strategies. You will collaborate with business partners on program‑specific tools, communicate program updates, and provide training and mentoring to underwriting team members.
Key Responsibilities
Drive the sales and underwriting relationship for programs, providing input and data to implement strategic underwriting plans and forecast profitability.
Analyze program manager relationships and recommend corrective actions when necessary.
Review highly complex risks and programs, making accept/reject decisions, determining appropriate endorsements and exclusions, and acting as an exposure‑management subject‑matter expert.
Engage in reinsurance discussions, verify appropriate use of reinsurance facilities, compile data for reinsurers, and maintain strong working relationships.
Develop and implement underwriting guidelines, rates, forms, product endorsements, and procedures; assist in department policy development.
Interact with business partners (claims, actuary, compliance, etc.) to achieve company objectives and resolve escalated issues.
Conduct audits of individual risks/programs for compliance with company guidelines, state regulations, and reinsurance conditions.
Establish and maintain effective relationships with Program Managers, traveling for marketing visits to generate growth and profitability.
Lead implementation of all new programs across underwriting guidelines, compliance, finance, reinsurance, claims, legal, and marketing functions.
Represent the programs team at industry functions to promote brand and identify new business opportunities.
Provide training and guidance to less experienced staff and may oversee underwriting and support staff.
Typical Skills And Experiences Education Undergraduate studies focused on Finance, Accounting, Economics, or Risk Management. Graduate degree preferred.
Experience Typically five or more years related experience as a professional, financial, and/or specialty lines underwriter. Program leadership experience in professional lines preferred. Experience with data management, imaging, procedures, and processes is helpful.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills Demonstrated knowledge of professional, financial, and/or specialty lines underwriting policies, practices, and procedures; insurance law; underwriting marketing principles; financial analysis; and market conditions. Strong verbal and written communication, negotiation, and influence skills. Ability to manage large programs, develop innovative solutions, and evaluate complex programs. Project and process management skills. Ability to read and understand financial documents and legal/business documents.
