
Associate/Full Professor & Director - Institute for Community Inclusion

Job Overview
The College of Education and Human Development is seeking a tenured, equity-minded leader to advance the Institute for Community Inclusion (ICI). The Director will hold a qualified Associate/Full Professor appointment in an academic unit within the College and provide overall direction and oversight for the ICI, integrating operations, program development, strategic planning, and external partnerships. The role involves collaboration with senior staff, the School for Global Inclusion and Social Development (SGISD), the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD), and Boston Children’s Hospital, ensuring mission alignment and resource development.
Responsibilities
Oversee and direct the ICI’s leadership structure, strategic planning, and organizational design, guiding the institute toward high‑priority needs in research, training, service, capacity development, innovation, and policy development.
Recruit staff and develop new partnerships, managing all ICI activities at planning, operational, implementation, and financial levels.
Work with funding entities (foundations, federal agencies, foundations, local/state/federal/international agencies) to secure resources for the ICI’s mission and programs.
Foster collaborative relationships with allied entities, including public and private agencies, trade associations, professional organizations, institutions of higher education, and the private sector.
Manage the development of materials that facilitate knowledge generation, capacity building, and replication of evidence‑based practices, supporting dissemination through academic journals, conferences, curricula, public media, and pre‑service and in‑service training.
Guide and advance the establishment of evidence‑based practices to ensure inclusion of persons with disabilities in community settings.
Expand the ICI’s relationships within CEHD academic departments, centers, and institutes, as well as other colleges at UMass Boston, establishing joint grant submissions and shared research and training activities.
Represent the ICI on public boards, task forces, and organizations that support its mission at international, national, state, and local levels.
Supervise senior staff, including the Associate Director and other leadership roles, and provide oversight for administrative, marketing, communication, and finance functions in collaboration with the Associate Director.
Collaborate with the ICI finance team, CEHD research team, and the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs in support of operations and grantsmanship.
Represent the ICI at administrative meetings of SGISD and the UMB Council of Centers and Institutes.
Lead staff development activities within the ICI and represent the needs of ICI staff to SGISD, CEHD, and the Division of Developmental Medicine at Children’s Hospital.
Serve as PI for the ICI UCEDD Core grant and collaborate with the Director of the LEND program at Boston Children’s Hospital.
Build the ICI’s global presence and educate policymakers on evidence‑based and innovative practices to support inclusion of persons with disabilities.
Maintain strong relationships with academic, research, policy, community, and advocacy partners across UMass Boston, other institutions, and Children’s Hospital Boston.
Serve on the leadership team for SGISD, representing ICI interests within the school and college.
Mentor SGISD graduate students and support graduate student mentorship across ICI; teaching is not the primary role, but the incumbent holds a tenured appointment within a CEHD department.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree and a minimum of ten (10) years of experience in a disability or related field, with demonstrated leadership in a multidisciplinary center. Extensive experience in securing external funding, strategic planning, and organizational partnership development is required. Prior university teaching, grantsmanship, administrative, research, management, and leadership experience, a history of contributions to the disability field and community service, and the ability to organize and manage multiple projects are required.
Preferred Qualifications
Terminal degree in a disability or related field with at least ten (10) years of experience in academic or executive leadership focused on disability.
Tenured faculty appointment at a research university.
