Controller - Residential Real Estate
Location - Camden, NJ
We are partnering with a growing residential real estate organization in the Camden, NJ area to identify a Controller who will oversee financial operations for a multifamily property portfolio. This highly visible leadership role is responsible for accounting, payroll, systems optimization, and supporting ownership with strategic financial insight.
Key Responsibilities Financial & Property Accounting
Oversee full‑cycle accounting for a multifamily portfolio
Manage general ledger, AP/AR, tenant ledgers, and lease accounting
Lead month‑end and year‑end close processes
Prepare property‑level and consolidated financial statements
Develop budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections
Lead annual budgeting and reforecasting efforts
Maintain internal controls and accounting policies
Payroll & HR Administration
Supervise payroll processing through ADP
Manage W-2/1099 reporting and payroll tax compliance
Oversee onboarding documentation and employee records
Coordinate benefits administration
Ensure integration between ADP and property management systems
Systems & Process Improvement
Optimize accounting systems and reporting workflows
Drive automation and process improvements
Support system integrations with property management platforms
Estate & Ownership Planning Support
Act as liaison between ownership, estate attorneys, CPAs, and advisors
Assist with trust accounting and entity‑level reporting
Support intercompany transactions and ownership structure tracking
Maintain strict confidentiality regarding ownership financial matters
Leadership
Manage and mentor a small accounting team
Partner with property management and operations leadership
Communicate financial insights to non‑financial stakeholders
Qualifications Experience
7‑10+ years of progressive accounting experience
4+ years in a Controller or senior accounting leadership role
Multifamily or property management accounting experience required
Experience managing portfolios of 500+ units preferred
Systems
Experience with property accounting systems such as Yardi, MRI, RealPage, or AppFolio
Payroll experience with ADP
Technical Skills
Advanced Excel
Strong financial reporting and analysis capabilities
Budgeting and forecasting expertise
Knowledge of internal controls
Education & Certifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration
CPA preferred but not required
