Position Overview Responsive Education Solutions is seeking a sophisticated, process-oriented Director of Accounting & Financial Operations to lead our financial functions. This role provides high-level oversight for the ResponsiveEd parent company (non-profit) and key subsidiaries, including but not limited to: Blue Learning (a non-profit Charter Management Organization) and Bright Thinker (for-profit curriculum sales).
Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, you will be a "systems-first" leader tasked with refining and optimizing our accounting practices across diverse business models. To be successful in this role, you must be highly hands‑on and assume direct ownership of the General Ledger. While accounting and financial integrity are the core focus of this position, the Director will also integrate necessary financial planning and analysis elements to support organizational decision‑making.
Key Responsibilities 1. General Ledger Ownership & Controller Functions
Assume direct ownership of the General Ledger for a diverse portfolio including the parent company and subsidiaries.
Actively manage and review detailed reconciliations and complex accounting entries to ensure compliance with GAAP and all relevant regulatory requirements.
2. Process Optimization & System Enhancement
Continuous Improvement Mandate: Evaluate and refine the “Closing Playbook” to streamline the monthly close and improve departmental efficiency.
Audit existing workflows to identify bottlenecks; implement best practices to reduce cycle times and increase data integrity.
3. Audit, Tax, & Compliance
Strengthen the internal audit-readiness program, personally ensuring all work papers and reconciliations are maintained at a high standard year‑round.
Oversee the preparation and filing of Form 990s and other required federal or state tax/regulatory documents.
Reporting Strategy: Design and maintain sophisticated financial reports to provide leadership with real‑time visibility.
Budget & Analysis: Serve as a key collaborator in the annual budgeting process and conduct high‑impact analyses to provide the CFO with data‑driven insights.
Manage a team of approximately 4 individuals, providing direct technical guidance, mentorship, and oversight of daily accounting and financial operations.
Foster a culture of professional growth, accuracy, and operational efficiency within the small, high‑impact team.
Qualifications
Experience:
10+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, with at least 4 years in a leadership role. Non-profit experience is preferred.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance. CPA is preferred.
Technical Skills:
Advanced proficiency in ERP systems is required. Sage Intacct experience is preferred.
Proficiency with Google Workspace, including Google Sheets, for complex data manipulation and collaborative reporting.
