Peer Recovery Specialist

Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED (bachelor's degree in human services or related field preferred). Completion of the Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) training curriculum through the Virginia Certification Board (VCB) is mandatory for CPRS certification. One year of experience providing peer/recovery support services or related behavioral health work is required, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Current Peer Recovery Specialist Certification in Virginia is preferred. At least two years of sustained recovery from substance use disorder, lived experience with substance use disorder, and experience providing community outreach services are also preferred. Full sustained recovery from substances is preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Working knowledge of assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental illness; ability to support others in recovery and demonstrate self‑directed recovery efforts; representation and advocacy of consumer perspectives within the community and mental health system; proficiency in operating a personal computer, related software, and standard office equipment; effective oral and written communication; development and maintenance of effective working relationships with internal and external customers. Preferred knowledge of substance use harm reduction principles, substance use treatment and resources; ability to exercise mature judgment, understanding of safety concerns, adapt well to changing priorities and challenging individuals, and embody a non‑judgmental, non‑coercive provision of services and resources.

Additional Requirements Must be a self‑identified current or former recipient of mental health services for a severe and persistent mental illness. Current valid driver’s license and good driving record are required. Applicants must pass pre‑employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check, and education/degree verification. This position is safety sensitive and subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Duties

Assists consumers in developing personal recovery and wellness goals, models/mentors recovery processes, and demonstrates coping skills.

Monitors and assesses consumer progress and makes recommendations or modifications to treatment plans.

Serves as a recovery agent by providing and advocating for effective recovery‑based services; assists consumers in accessing services by educating about community and natural supports and how to use them in the recovery process.

Establishes rapport and reduces harm by providing critical, life‑saving resources such as naloxone, drug testing supplies, safer sex supplies, and hygiene items.

Works as part of a team to provide harm reduction tools and strategies, connects individuals to community resources, and links them to recovery services and supports using a person‑centered approach.

Responds to overdose hotspots and collaborates with county and community resources.

Performs other work as required.

Shift Monday - Friday; 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., with occasional evening and weekend availability as needed.
