SUMMARY The Recreation Specialist I, under the direct supervision of the Playground Director or Playground Supervisor, assists in the planning and supervising of recreational activities for the City of Groton Parks and Recreation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES
Supervises and delegates duties to recreational assistants while maintaining contact with them and participants during on‑site activities and field trips.
Develops new and original ideas related to specific activities for program participants.
Teaches basic fundamentals and concepts of various recreational activities and informs Recreation Assistants about planned activities; may participate in activities when applicable.
Maintains accurate records of attendance and equipment inventory.
Informs the Playground Supervisor of any issues or needs regarding participant attendance and program equipment.
Maintains accurate records of field‑trip information and informs parents/guardians of any updates.
Follows all safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe environment for program participants.
Demonstrates flexibility to adapt to situations arising from working with children.
Adapts to tasks required by the supervisor.
Performs all other related duties as assigned by the Playground Director or Playground Supervisor.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledgeable in the principles and practices of recreational activities and the use of recreational equipment.
Basic knowledge of fundamentals, techniques, rules and regulations pertaining to playground activities and special events conducted at the playground program.
Knowledge of instructing groups of children about playground activity participation.
Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with co‑workers, program participants and members of the general public.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE High school graduate or GED.
Preferred: One (1) year of education in recreation, physical education or another related field.
Required: One (1) year experience as a Recreation Assistant or equivalent combination of experience and training.
CERTIFICATIONS Must possess and maintain proof of successful completion of Adult/Child/Infant Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation and basic first aid certification.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS Frequent requirements to talk, hear, sit, stand, walk, stoop, use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms. Must be able to lift up to twenty (20) pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT Work performed in a building, pavilion, or outdoors; exposure to weather elements.
