Corporate Communications Manager – Strategic Initiatives
Wellmark, a mutual insurance company in Iowa and South Dakota, seeks a Corporate Communications Manager to join its Corporate Communications team and help tell its story to a wide range of internal and external audiences. The role focuses on strategic initiatives, supporting the creation and implementation of communication strategies that increase awareness and understanding of Wellmark’s efforts to improve health care for Iowans and South Dakotans.
About the Role As part of Wellmark's Corporate Communications team, the Manager will support the development and execution of communication strategies that reach internal and external audiences. Responsibilities include providing strategic consultation to executive leaders and cross‑functional teams, maintaining a consistent narrative across channels, identifying performance measures, optimizing activations, fostering stakeholder relationships, and collaborating across the organization to build and protect Wellmark’s reputation.

You are a natural collaborator and connector with a demonstrated history of building productive relationships at all levels, from peers to senior leaders to media representatives. You possess a deep understanding of measurement methods and how metrics shape stories to drive change. You are curious, asking "why" to improve outcomes.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
4+ years of communications experience, preferably in health care or insurance, including partnership with senior leadership.
Excellent writing, content creation, and editing skills aligned with AP Style; ability to produce engaging content for varied audiences.
Experience developing communications plans with defined benchmarks, gathering and analyzing data, and reporting performance impact.
Strong problem‑solving and attention to detail; professional, polished, and diplomatic.
Strong understanding of regulatory and public policy processes at state and federal levels, and experience communicating business impacts.
Effective consulting and interpersonal skills; ability to build collaboration and trust, give and receive constructive feedback.
Proactive self‑starter with strong planning, time‑management, prioritization, and organization; adaptable to changing priorities; ability to measure, evaluate, and refine work processes and projects to achieve goals while maintaining satisfaction.
Ability to stay up to speed on new trends and emerging platforms.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.
Preferred
7+ years of internal communications experience, including partnership with senior leadership.
Additional Information
Develop and refine communication strategies and tactics to drive awareness and engagement of key audiences.
Serve as a strategic consultant for leaders and cross‑functional teams on how to best reach employees to drive strategy‑aligned behaviors and external audiences to meet business objectives.
Lead relationships with strategy owners, product owners, managers, and other leaders as a trusted strategic partner.
Think strategically and holistically to prioritize and connect initiatives and messages across the organization.
Deliver clear, concise communications aligned with brand voice and AP style across multiple mediums.
Manage and prioritize multiple initiatives to deliver high‑quality work on deadline.
Set benchmarks and measure performance to continuously improve.
Understand Wellmark’s products, services, and business to incorporate them into strategic communication plans.
Other duties as assigned.
