Job Description Summary The Package Engineer will compete, innovate, and deliver by leading packaging projects for medical device products from Front End Innovation through New Product Development. The R&D Engineer will support and/or lead packaging projects involving consumer-facing medical device products, manage and execute all packaging activities for concept development, industrial design, prototyping, packaging materials, design/re-design for consumer research, and equipment with an eye to scaling up activities for commercialization.

Responsibilities

Lead new packaging development projects in Front End Innovation (FEI) through the New Product Development (NPD) teams.

Collaborate with Product Development, Industrial Design, Marketing, Operations, Sourcing, and other internal organizations to develop new packaging to meet consumer and retailer needs.

Work with Creative design internally and externally for consumer preferred packaging.

Translate consumer use requirements into packaging concepts with rapid prototype generations for iterative qualitative testing.

Actively participate with project teams to drive prototype concepts for qualitative and quantitative research.

Collaborate with outside suppliers to develop and qualify new packaging components from concept through to launch.

Develop and own COGS for packaging system components.

Create and maintain technical documentation such as packaging specifications and test reports.

Analyze concepts to ensure that the specifications (Package Performance Specifications) meet consumer, marketing, and/or regulatory requirements.

Develop custom test methods as needed.

Stay informed about industry trends, sustainability, innovation developments, etc.

Travel to suppliers and manufacturing sites for design trials as needed.

Write testing protocols and lead appropriate documentation of activities in accordance with existing policies and procedures (Divisions, Corporate, and regulatory compliance).

Other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications Education:

BS in Industrial Design, Packaging Engineering, or related technical field of study required.

Experience

Minimum 5+ years of experience or based upon experience required.

Consumer Packaged Goods experience required.

Medical device experience is nice to have.

Experience and passion for consumer qualitative research a plus.

Experience with medical device and/or consumer-facing packaging lead concept ideas through NPD to the market required.

Experience and passion with consumer-facing packaging and research background bringing ideas from FEI through NPD to market.

Drawing experience and proficiency preferred (Artios/AutoCAD, SolidWorks, etc.).

Project management preferred.

Manufacturing site exposure a plus.

Prototype generation experience a plus.

People management a plus.

Abilities, Knowledge and Skills

Proven ability to design and lead innovative packaging concept systems.

Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Microsoft Project for high level of written and communication skills.

High level of written, communication and presentation skills.

Spanish language skills a plus.

Travel 25% of the time.
