The Director, HR Field Support
serves as a highly skilled, mobile HR leader deployed to facilities experiencing leadership gaps, transitions, or operational challenges. This role functions as the interim Hospital Director of Human Resources, providing both tactical execution and strategic leadership to ensure continuity of HR operations, regulatory compliance, and workforce stability.
This position partners closely with facility leadership and corporate HR to stabilize HR functions, assess organizational needs, implement best practices, and drive employee engagement and retention initiatives. The Director, HR Field Support plays a critical role in rapidly evaluating current state operations, identifying risks, and executing action plans that align with company standards and long-term goals.
Essential Functions
Deploy to assigned facilities to assume interim HR leadership responsibilities during vacancies, leaves, or organizational transitions.
Quickly assess HR operations, identify gaps, and implement stabilization and improvement plans.
Serve as a trusted advisor to the Hospital CEO and leadership team, providing guidance on workforce strategy, employee relations, and compliance.
Ensure continuity and execution of all core HR functions, including recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, payroll coordination, and benefits administration.
Maintain compliance with Joint Commission standards, federal/state regulations, and company policies.
Audit HR processes, personnel files, and documentation to ensure accuracy and regulatory readiness.
Lead and support recruitment and retention efforts, especially in high‑need or high‑turnover environments.
Partner with leadership and Talent Acquisition to develop staffing strategies and workforce plans aligned with operational goals.
Drive engagement initiatives that reinforce company culture and improve employee satisfaction and retention.
Provide guidance and direct support on complex employee relations issues, investigations, and corrective actions.
Ensure effective implementation of performance management processes, including evaluations and coaching of leaders.
Support leaders in building accountability, improving team dynamics, and addressing performance concerns.
Identify leadership and staff development opportunities and partner with corporate teams to deliver solutions.
Support recruitment and onboarding of permanent HR leadership when applicable.
Provide a structured transition plan and knowledge transfer to ensure continuity upon exit from assignment.
When not actively deployed to a facility, lead and support special projects, strategic initiatives, and system‑wide HR priorities, which may include process improvement, policy development, talent initiatives, audits, and cross‑functional projects to enhance organizational effectiveness.
Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.
Requirements Travel Requirements:
Position will require extensive travel. Upwards of 75‑80%.
Education / Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related field (or equivalent experience).
SPHR or PHR certification preferred.
7+ years of progressive HR experience, including leadership roles.
Successful experience in hospital HR support including payroll, training, onboarding and hiring.
Experience in multi‑site, turnaround, or interim leadership roles preferred.
Strong background in employee relations, Joint Commission surveys, HR compliance, and HR operations.
Ability to become certified in SAMA or other de‑escalation programs.
Skills / Abilities
Ability to rapidly assess situations and execute with urgency and sound judgment.
Strong strategic thinking combined with hands‑on execution.
Exceptional interpersonal and influencing skills with hospital and regional leaders.
High level of acumen in all computer skills, including Excel, Outlook and HR Technology systems (HRIS, ATS, LMS, etc).
High adaptability and resilience in fast‑paced, changing environments.
Strong organizational and project management skills.
Ability to manage high‑volume workload with competing priorities.
Advanced knowledge of HR laws, compliance, and best practices.
Demonstrates a voice of calm, professionalism and leadership through all situations.
Maintains strict confidentiality and professionalism, at all times.
Work Environment Subject to many interruptions. Occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries. This position can be high paced and stressful; must be able to cope mentally and physically to atmosphere. Work requires spending approximately 90% or more of the time inside a building that offers protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. Travel required, including via automobile, planes and/or trains, as required.
