Job Overview
Cogent Communications, a Tier 1 facilities‑based ISP, provides businesses with high‑speed Internet and Ethernet transport services. The Sales Engineer (SE) delivers pre‑sales technical support to the sales organization, interacting with clients, qualifying opportunities, resolving technical issues, and delivering training to sales representatives. The position may require up to 30% travel.
Compensation Base Salary Pay Range: $100,000–$125,000 per year. Specific offers are determined by experience, education, skills, certifications, and business needs.
Responsibilities
Provide technical support to internal salespeople and external customers
Attend sales and customer meetings, over the phone and in person
Develop technical responses and strategy for RFIs and RFPs
Administer technical training and guidance to sales reps and management
Advocate for customers on all post‑sale implementation issues until resolved
Ensure correct technical content of all customer orders
Design customer technical solutions with engineering diagrams
Understand and convey technical advantages of Cogent services
Other duties as assigned by management
Qualifications
3+ years in the telecom/Internet industry or related field providing technical sales support
General understanding of global telecommunications technologies and services
Good understanding of Cogent’s products: Internet and IP addresses, Virtual Private Networks (Ethernet VPLS and MPLS IP‑VPN), Colocation, Optical Wavelengths
Self‑starting, initiative, and teamwork ability
Proven experience managing multiple projects and opportunities simultaneously
Exemplary organizational skills and time‑management planning
Understanding of the sales cycle and solution‑selling process
Proactive communication style ensuring timely status of projects to sales reps and customers
Excellent problem‑solving skills
Ability to hear and understand specific customer requirements related to Cogent products and services
Extract hidden or unrealized customer requirements and gain consensus on these requirements
Creatively synthesize solutions within the scope and limitations of Cogent products and services
Ability to travel
Fluency in English is a must; other languages welcome
