Job Summary
The City of Bessemer Utility Service Representatives are responsible for inspecting and repairing utility meters (e.g., water, electrical). They interact with utility customers by responding to complaints and gathering information to answer inquiries, aiding in maintaining water and electrical services. Employees receive daily assignments from the supervisor, including instructions on tasks, limitations, quality, quantity, deadlines and priorities. The supervisor provides additional instructions for new, difficult or unusual assignments. Work is reviewed through daily customer service reports and performance evaluations to ensure technical accuracy and compliance with established procedures and guidelines. Compensation & Benefits

Driver’s license. Experience reading power and water meters. Typical Job Duties
Receives assignments and gathers all necessary tools, materials and supplies needed to complete daily assignments. Operates a variety of equipment such as service trucks, hand-held tools, power tools and specialized utility and meter equipment. Repairs or replaces malfunctioning or broken meters (e.g., water or power) and verifies that meters with high or abnormal usage are functioning properly. Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies and/or guidelines. Performs general administrative and/or clerical functions (e.g., general record keeping, paperwork) to review (e.g., abnormal usage), communicate, document or maintain office information. Communicates with other individuals and departments through phone, radio, e-mails and memos to assist others, investigate complaints and maintain positive relationships; includes continuous training. Restores or discontinues utility service when customers fail to pay bills and investigates theft. Physical Demands
Moderate physical exertion, occasional prolonged stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling. May involve lifting items up to 50 lbs. Work Environment
Work conducted indoors in an office setting as well as field visits to external places of business and residences. Use of hand tools such as hammer, screwdrivers, wrenches. May be exposed to weather conditions (extreme hot or cold temperatures) or other potentially hazardous conditions near roadway traffic or wildlife. EEO Statement
