Job Summary
Assistant Mechanical Designer shall work in a team environment and under the directive of a lead Designer to develop accurate, constructible, coordinated, and timely Mechanical system models meeting McKenney’s drafting standards and fully coordinated with the architectural & structural elements of the building and the other building trades (sprinkler, ductwork, piping, etc.). An Assistant Mechanical Designer will also be responsible for providing accurate shop drawings that support the construction team. The designer will report to the Lead Designer & Production supervisor and be responsible for interacting with the fabrication supervisor, detailers, project managers, project engineers, and field foreman.
Duties & Essential Job Functions
Utilize McKenney’s CAD standards to create models consistent with company and project requirements
Accurately model systems in compliance with project plans, project specifications, and code requirements for the purposes of producing fabrication documents (spool sheets and drawings) from the model
Coordinate all systems with ductwork, mechanical equipment, other trades, and architectural and structural elements of the building
Coordinate all work to provide safe and adequate access in accordance with manufacturer and code clearances to avoid installation conflicts in the field
Utilize the fabrication team to provide annotated, dimensioned shop drawings, spool assemblies, and spool drawings
Review and distribute fabrication information including assembly sheets, bills of material, and spool drawings to project managers and field leaders
Effectively and proactively communicate with project managers, project engineers, and field foremen during the design, coordination, and construction process. This includes communication of challenges and schedule progress on a timely basis (weekly at a minimum)
Use Company tools to manage requests for information and shop drawing progress
Communicate areas of deficiency/gaps along with proposed solutions (RFI’s) on projects to support timely completion of work
Produce all documents on time and within budget (estimated drafting hours) in a timely manner based on job requirements to meet commitments to our customers, both internal and external

Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or a related field, or at least two years of experience with Autodesk modeling software (AutoCAD or Revit), or at least four years of field experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Mechanical drafting using Autodesk Fabrication CADmep software and Revit software
Basic understanding of what HVAC Mechanical piping systems are
Ability to visualize three-dimensional layouts from two-dimensional drawings
Experience in the construction industry

Ability to read and interpret mechanical, architectural, and structural construction documents
Must be a self-starter, with the ability to work well as part of a team and independently
Strong written and verbal communication skills
