Job Overview
A Chautauqua Theater Company Mainstage Designer shall design the scenic, costume, lighting, sound or projection elements of the play. Designer shall attend design and production meetings and be in residence for all technical rehearsals and preview performances.
Job Details
The Chautauqua Theater Company summer season consists of fully produced productions, as well as several new play workshops/readings. You can learn more about the season and the company at theater.chq.org. The company follows the Actor’s Equity Safety Guidelines and guidelines of the CDC, IATSE, USA and SDC.
Compensation
Designer’s total compensation for the production shall be $3,500. Please refer to the USA Project Only agreement and supplemental rider for payment and other details regarding compensation.
Additional Terms
Theater shall provide round-trip economy air transportation or mileage reimbursement ($0.65/mi) to/from Chautauqua Institution from New York, NY (or equivalent) booked at least 3 weeks prior to travel.
Accommodations (private room, shared living space) and traditional gate pass for duration of Designer's time at Chautauqua.
Chautauqua Institution’s car service to/from Buffalo airport and reimbursement of group transportation from airport of origin.
Work Day
Design the production elements for the play (either scenic, costume, lighting, sound or projections).
Attend design and production meetings.
Attend all technical rehearsals and preview performances.
Consult with Mainstage Director and Chautauqua Theater Company's Producing Artistic Director.
Referral Program
Chautauqua Institution’s Referral Bonus Program offers a $500 referral bonus (less taxes) for active employees referring a new candidate who is hired and remains employed for at least 90 days from the first physical date of work. For seasonal positions working less than 6 months, the new candidate must remain actively employed for at least 30 days from the first physical date of work and until the closing date of the season. The closing date of the season is the last Sunday in August.
Schedule
Chautauqua Institution and Chautauqua Hotel Company offer flexible schedules, full and part-time, for seasonal employment during summer operations starting annually each June and concluding in August. Seasonal employment may be available earlier (pre‑season) and beyond season (post‑season) based on business needs and candidate availability. Schedules typically include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays as a requirement. You will confirm your final schedule with management at the time of interview and offer of employment; generally anticipate an average of 48 hours per week, in compliance with rehearsal hours as outlined in the Actors’ Equity URTA – Tier 3 CBA. Scheduled hours will include evenings, weekends, and holidays based on business needs.
Living on the Grounds
This position offers employer‑provided housing and parking. Housing includes a private bedroom and shared living space.
