Communications Manager – Public Information Office
Full-Time
Salary: $85,000 - 97,000 DOQ
Join our team as the Communications Manager, where you will oversee the City’s public information functions. This dynamic role entails managing media relations, developing strategic messaging, and handling crisis communications, all while ensuring that the City’s voice is articulated clearly and accurately. We are seeking a proactive individual capable of providing strategic guidance to City leadership and facilitating the timely dissemination of information. Key Responsibilities
Oversee media relations and respond promptly to inquiries
Serve in an on‑call rotation for after‑hours communications support
Develop and implement communication strategies
Consult with executive management on communication procedures and policies
Monitor and analyze media coverage and trends
Develop internal communications and ensure timely information delivery
Train and develop the Public Information Officer
Staff the Emergency Operations Center during emergencies
Ensure compliance with communication laws and regulations
Maintain consistency and accuracy in public messaging
Organize news conferences and create press kits
Write, proofread, and edit documents for dissemination
Identify emerging issues and recommend communication approaches
Drive social media engagement through strategic content and performance optimization
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, journalism, public relations, or related field
Five years of experience in communications, journalism, media, or public relations
Government communications experience preferred
Valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license
Special Requirements
Obtain FEMA certifications (ICS‑100, IC‑200, IC‑300, IS‑700, IS‑800, G289 or IS‑29, G290) within twelve (12) months of hire
Skills and Abilities
Strong editorial judgment and initiative
Excellent public speaking and interpersonal skills
Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast‑paced environment
Proficiency in modern office practices and technology
Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment
Strong organizational and prioritization skills
