Job Summary
Under the direction of the Archivist, the Fellow arranges, describes, digitizes, and publicizes historic photographic collections including the photographs of Leon B. Strout. The Fellow works with archivists to learn archival standards, houses, arranges, and describes photographic prints and negatives. The Fellow builds digital access by digitizing images, creating metadata, and posting them through the Library’s digital collections platform and external databases. The Fellow promotes and facilitates access through outreach programs, exhibitions, printed promotional material, and collaboration with cultural property organizations, including the local historical society.

Term, Compensation, and Eligibility
This is a two-year term position. Compensation: $51,000 annually.

Open to Bowdoin College graduates from the 2024, 2025, and 2026 class years only.

Responsibilities

Arrange, describe, digitize, and publicize historic photographic collections.

Apply archival standards and best practices while housing, arranging, and describing photographic prints and negatives.

Build digital access by digitizing images, creating metadata, and posting through the Library’s digital platform and external databases.

Promote and facilitate access through outreach programs, exhibitions, printed promotional material, and collaboration with local historical society.

Qualifications

Completed Bachelor’s degree before start date.

Familiarity or experience with archival best practices, including research, processing, and digitization.

Basic familiarity with digitization approaches, image manipulation, file management, and metadata creation.

Detail-oriented work with accuracy and confidentiality.

Preferred

Familiarity with the social and cultural history of Midcoast Maine.

Experience Requirements and Skills

Experience with archival research, description, metadata creation, and/or digitization (paid, volunteer, student, or internship).

Facility with spreadsheets and databases.

Knowledge of photographic processes and/or history.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
