Qualified Craft Worker (Carpentry)
Location:
Norwalk, CT
Full‑time, 37.5 hours per week
Work schedule: Monday – Friday
Shift: First Shift, 8:00am – 4:00pm
Purpose of Job Class (Nature of Work)
In a state agency this class is accountable for performing a full range of highly skilled duties in the carpentry trade area.
Examples of Duties
Performs highly skilled tasks in accordance with standard carpentry trade practices and codes.
Performs alterations, repairs and maintenance of structures and facilities.
Performs skilled bench work, operating equipment such as power saws, jointers, wood lathes, planers, boring, sanding and mortising machines.
Builds and repairs cabinets.
Cleans, sharpens and repairs hand and bench tools.
Lays resilient flooring and Formica.
Makes estimates of time and personnel, and determines and obtains required materials for assigned tasks.
Keeps necessary records.
May perform duties related to similar trade areas as required.
May perform duties such as cutting glass and glazing windows, fabricating signs, operating heavy equipment, or responding to fire and/or crash emergency situations at state‑owned airports.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Considerable knowledge and ability to apply standard tools, materials, methods, and carpentry trade practices.
Interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
Ability to prepare estimates and keep shop records, and to use computer software.
Minimum Qualifications – General Experience
Four (4) years of experience in the carpentry trade.
Minimum Qualifications – Special Experience
Two (2) years of the general experience must have been performing skilled carpentry trades. For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Skilled Maintainer or Transportation Maintainer 2.
Minimum Qualifications – Substitutions Allowed
Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of subject requirements in a maintenance trade area may substitute for two (2) years of the general experience.
Two (2) years of experience as a Qualified Craft Worker Trainee in a designated maintenance trade area may substitute for the general and special experience.
Experience performing technical duties within the carpentry trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier, or large compound may substitute for the general and special experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with snow removal.
Experience climbing ladders.
Experience lifting.
Special Requirements
Incumbents may be required to possess or acquire and retain appropriate current licenses, permits, or certifications.
Required completion of hazardous materials training such as asbestos, PCB, and PFAS consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment.
Physical Requirements
Adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, visual and auditory acuity, and maintenance of such fitness to perform the duties of the class.
A physical examination may be required.
Working Conditions
May be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
May be exposed to risk of injury from equipment, extreme weather conditions, or environmental conditions.
