Requirements

  • MOS CODES: None
  • Education and Experience: Bachelor's Degree or higher in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, or a closely related field and four (4) years of professional experience in journalism, public relations or marketing.
  • Licenses and Certificates: Valid Texas Class "C" Driver's License or equivalent from another state by time of appointment.

General Purpose

Under general direction, manages public information, marketing, outreach and education, development, and volunteer programs. Serves as media spokesperson and government liaison for the assigned department.

Typical Duties

  • Participate in developing and communicating strategic initiatives.
  • Plan, develop, and direct marketing, development, outreach, and education efforts.
  • Develop and present comprehensive public education programs for varying audiences.
  • Prepare and recommend the purchase of educational materials for education programs.
  • Oversee volunteer program and provide direction to increase volunteer engagement.
  • Develop and organize plans for news conferences and other major announcements.
  • Provide public relations support to the Director and staff through talking points, fact sheets, and other activities.
  • Participate in creating and maintaining relationships with internal and external partners and community donors.
  • Uphold and protect brand standards.
  • Oversee the development of advertising promotional materials, social media presence, and events.
  • Help develop solutions to customer and community concerns.
  • Develop and oversee press releases, media advisories, information flyers, PSAs, and other informational communication.
  • Oversee content and development of the department’s website.
  • Oversee and manage the budget for the marketing and public engagement program.
  • Respond to media inquiries, and proactively disseminate the department’s message to media partners to educate the community and promote the services and initiatives.
  • Work directly with the Public Affairs Office on citywide messaging related to the assignment department.

Supervise Assigned Personnel

  • Schedule, assign, instruct, guide, and check work.
  • Appraise employee performance.
  • Provide training and development.
  • Enforce personnel rules and regulations and work behavior standards firmly and impartially.
  • Counsel, motivate, and maintain harmony.
  • Interview applicants.
  • Recommend hiring, termination, transfers, discipline, or other employee status changes.
