Overview
Position: Communication Specialist / Technical Writer. Location: San Antonio, Texas. Work Environment: Onsite. Clearance Required: Public Trust. Status: Contingent. The Communication Specialist serves as the program's lead technical writer and editor, responsible for researching, writing, and editing a wide range of technical documentation including user manuals, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and reports. This role develops and implements communication strategies to effectively disseminate program information to stakeholders, drafts content for websites and newsletters, and manages the centralized repository for all program documentation to ensure version control and accuracy.
Responsibilities
Lead technical writer and editor for program-wide documentation, user guides, and SOPs
Develop and implement communication strategies for program stakeholders
Create and maintain content for the AFMEDCOM IDES Knowledge Exchange (KX) website
Ensure version control and accuracy across the centralized documentation repository
Provide editorial quality assurance for all external program communications
Draft engaging content for program newsletters and briefings
Assist MTFs and leadership in creating clear, concise presentations and media articles
Coordinate with internal teams to gather information and draft responses to program inquiries
Assist with maintaining the AFMEDCOM IDES Knowledge Exchange (KX) website content (quarterly updates)
Verify proper marking of sensitive information in accordance with classification and CUI guidelines
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in management, business, healthcare administration, or relevant healthcare specialties (e.g., health information management, nursing management). Education substitution: An additional four (4) years of direct experience as described in the experience requirement may be substituted for the degree.
Minimum seven (7) years’ experience in the military healthcare environment with in-depth knowledge of AFMS organization, mission, and operations gained within the last two (2) years
Minimum five (5) years’ experience working directly within the DoD Disability Evaluation System (DES) or as a PEBLO
Minimum five (5) years’ experience in the creation, storage, and retrieval of data in DAF and Military Health Service systems
Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of the DES process and DoD DES guidelines through prior experience creating training materials, user guides, or similar instructional documents
Must be a U.S. citizen
Must successfully complete a Tier 1 (T1) background investigation
Preferred Qualifications
Supervisory experience in a healthcare or administrative setting
Advanced experience with technical writing standards and styles
Experience with content management systems for internal knowledge portals
