Job Overview

Protestant Music Director Pianist Vocalist – Music Ministry International, Dayton, OH. This is a 1099 contractor position.

Responsibilities

General Responsibilities

  1. Provide musical directorship for the Protestant Service at Wright Patterson AFB.
  2. Provide musical directorship for a minimum of one rehearsal and one worship service each week.
  3. Follow direction of the Protestant Service Chaplain for music selection.
  4. Lead the praise team and congregation in worship and vocally lead them as required by the Chaplain.
  5. Coordinate all support requirements with the Chaplain or their designated representative.
  6. Assist the Chaplain or their designated representative in developing an annual calendar of events, budgeting for the Chapel Tithes & Offerings fund, Appropriated Fund budget, and volunteer training requirements under music programming.
  7. Return all government‑owned music equipment obtained in the performance of the required duties following the last service provided under the contract.
  8. Ensure no unauthorized duplication of copyrighted materials and maintain proper cataloguing with Christian Contemporary Licensing Incorporated (CCLI) where applicable.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the beginning of worship services, special services, and rehearsals.
  2. Submit purchase or repair requests as needed to support the music program.
  3. Recruit volunteer musicians and singers to ensure a robust music program.
  4. Manage facility readiness: open, restore to neutral setting, clean, and secure facilities used for music events, rehearsals, or services.
  5. Maintain a professional attitude and appearance.
  6. Singe religious music appropriate to the Protestant Service.
  7. Provide arranged and approved music compatible with the service.
  8. Provide Audio/Visual (A/V) lyrics (e.g., PowerPoint slides) for all services as required.
  9. Attend meetings and training related to the music program.
  10. Attend worship clinics and professional conferences in music and sound if required; travel may be required.
  11. Lead all songs for congregational singing to create a worshipful atmosphere.
  12. Maintain a good rapport with Chapel staff, military members, the COR, musicians, praise team members, and congregants.
  13. Coordinate with the Protestant worship service chaplain to review new music releases for suitability and performance level.

Education and Experience

  1. Have at least two years of college in music (or related field), or equivalent experience in a chapel/church setting.
  2. Possess a broad knowledge of contemporary and blended Praise & Worship music and how to lead a worship service in this style.
  3. Be able to plan, organize, and lead a Protestant contemporary and blended praise team.
  4. Have detailed knowledge and ability to sight‑read sheet music for piano, play from chord charts, and sing; support congregational singing in a contemporary Christian style.
  5. Understand and honor Christian Protestant theology while working in a pluralistic environment under the direction of the lead Protestant Worship Service Chaplain.
  6. Be proficient at individual singing, playing piano/keyboard or guitar, and leading congregational singing in a contemporary Christian musical style.
  7. Possess the ability to develop and maintain a healthy relationship with volunteers, Chapel staff, the COR, and parishioners.
  8. Fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English.

Duty Hours

  1. Present for all rehearsals, services, and special events at Wright-Patterson Chapel facilities; expected total of 120 events over 12 months, including up to 60 rehearsals and 52 services per week.
  2. If absent, provide a replacement director at least 10 days prior to service, meeting or exceeding required qualifications.
  3. Rehearsals shall be at times allowing maximum participation; each rehearsal shall be 1 to 1.5 hours long.

Additional Responsibilities

  1. All liturgies are at the discretion of the Chaplain.
  2. May attend Chaplain Corps annual training.
  3. Rehearsals, weekly performances, and worship services will generally be held in one of the Chapel facilities; alternate locations may be used during renovations or special circumstances.
  4. Equipment and supplies necessary to accomplish duties will be provided by the Wright‑Patterson AFB Chapel.
  5. Comply with all Department of Defense Instructions, Air Force Instructions, and Chapel Operating Instructions regarding facility use, resource protection, fire prevention, and fund utilization.
  6. Submit facility use requests to arrange meetings, rehearsals, and services.
  7. Use only provided government‑furnished telephone, copier, and security access; computer access is not provided.
  8. Maintain and report on the condition of government‑owned instruments and equipment; repair or replace damaged items due to negligence.

Taxes

The Music Director will be responsible for filing all applicable social security, federal, state, or host nation taxes and for obtaining necessary business licenses and registrations as required by law.
