The Palos Heights Public Library is looking for a service-oriented, collaborative leader to join our management team as the Head of the Public Services Department. In addition to overseeing the operation of this department, this person will play a key role in the overall operation of the library, helping to coordinate projects with various other departments and doing whatever it takes to provide the best possible service to the residents of Palos Heights.

Essential Functions

  • Serves on the library’s Management Team, providing leadership for staff in all departments.
  • Hires, trains, directs, and mentors all Public Services Department staff.
  • Works at the Public Services Desk, assisting patrons in-person, online, and via phone.
  • Coordinates all adult programming.
  • Serves as liaison with community organizations.
  • Interprets and enforces library policies and procedures.
  • Assists in the development of relevant library policies and procedures.
  • Reports to the Library Director.

Necessary Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in library science from an accredited school or equivalent work experience.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with people from a wide range of backgrounds and in high-pressure situations.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to be accurate, detail-oriented, and efficient in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Ability to provide strong leadership and clear direction.
  • Ability to exercise reasonable and independent judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to adapt to and effectively implement change.

Additional Desired Qualifications

  • 5 years of experience working in a public library.
  • 2 years of experience in a supervisory role.
  • Familiarity with SWAN consortium and SirsiDynix Symphony.

Hours

Full time, 40 hours per week including one evening per week and rotating weekends
