Overview
The Broadcast Engineer will build and maintain state‑of‑the‑art contribution, distribution, and routing platforms for the international news studios in Washington, DC. The role requires deep knowledge of network principles, broadcast technologies, television standards, LAN, WAN, WLAN networks, and network services.
Essential Job Functions
Design, build, and maintain contribution and distribution platforms for the broadcaster.
Develop and sustain cutting‑edge broadcast network infrastructure.
Conduct performance and system tests to evolve facility architecture and infrastructure.
Analyze dashboards, optimize system traffic and security, and identify and resolve bugs.
Collaborate with vendor product development, operations, and engineering teams to define long‑term strategy and implement roadmaps.
Operate broadcast switches and routers for signal distribution across all operational areas.
Manage IP‑based network technologies, WAN interconnects, virtual machines, AD domain services, group policy deployment, and database administration.
Support on‑air broadcast systems and maintain compliance with business continuity and disaster recovery plans.
Provide implementation services for high‑availability network infrastructure, including installation, configuration, administration, testing, training, and support.
Design IP schemes and network diagrams for multi‑server environments.
Maintain comprehensive documentation: signal flow diagrams, system configurations, and technical documentation.
Perform system maintenance: operating‑system patches, software upgrades, and routine hardware configuration.
Respond to emergency situations as needed to resolve immediate concerns.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of broadcast technologies, television standards, and associated systems.
Strong IT skills and experience with installation of IP‑based systems.
Understanding of SMPTE standards and ability to implement quality control on broadcast equipment.
Proficiency with packet/protocol analyzers and TCP dump for performance troubleshooting.
Capability to work independently as an individual contributor, lead technically when required, and collaborate within a team.
Experience with on‑prem and cloud‑based storage and compute infrastructure.
Familiarity with Lawo audio consoles, Lawo VSM NDI workflows, MOSART automation systems, Riedel intercom systems, and broadcast audio mixing.
Strong documentation skills and ability to create signal flow diagrams, system configurations, and technical documentation.
Excellent problem‑solving abilities and effective communication skills.
Ability to work in a fast‑moving environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Communications, Electronic Engineering, or related field (preferred).
Technical school training with electronics training and related experience (acceptable).
CCNA or CCNP Cisco certifications.
Five or more years of experience in a broadcast environment.
Experience with VMware system administration for medium‑sized businesses with multiple offices.
Experience with AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Cloudflare, or other cloud service providers.
Self‑starter attitude with exposure to business start‑up environments.
Teamwork focused attitude geared toward knowledge transfer within a multi‑skilled team.
