Overview
Buchanan Community Schools is welcoming applicants for a Marching Band Percussion Instructor. The ideal candidate would coordinate all percussion activities with assistance from the Director for the Buchanan High School Marching Band.

Responsibilities

Working with the Band Director to audition and assign instrumentation and parts

Developing and delivering a fundamentals-based instructional method

Maintaining, inventorying, and ordering percussion equipment

Writing and/or teaching a variety of cadences and warm ups

Modification/rewrites of printed percussion book to adapt to skill level

Instruction of both battery and sideline percussion (a pit assistant is provided for pre-camp and band camp)

Teaching of basic corps style marching maneuvers

Instruction of marching band drill

Attending all required rehearsals and performances

Scheduling additional percussion rehearsals outside of full band time

Displays tact and courtesy when dealing with students, staff and others

Familiar with MCBA or similar competitive circuit

Any other duties or responsibilities as deemed appropriate by the administration

Maintains regular, reliable and punctual attendance

The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout their employment in the District

Marching band percussion students.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience:

High school diploma or GED preferred

Language Skills:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, students, or other employees of the organization

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but basic written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations

Other Skills and Abilities:

Ability to work in a friendly manner with co-workers and students; able to effectively take direction and work both independently and as a member of a team; ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies; ability to handle complex and stressful issues or situations with sound judgment, common sense, and a calm demeanor; impeccable character, sense of humor, and compassion for students, families, and district staff; good communication skills; punctual and rarely absent work habits

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk and continuously required to stand. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and waist while performing the duties of this job. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp items. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and depth perception and peripheral vision and color vision.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works outdoors and will occasionally work indoors. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 degrees and occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud to where you have to raise your voice to be heard.

Preferred

Experience working with high school aged children.

Experience with MCBA or Similar competitive circuit.

Position Details

Title: Marching Band Percussion Instructor – Buchanan High School

Reports to: Buchanan High School Principal, Mr. Brian Pruett

Starting date: Tentatively June 10, 2026

Compensation: $2,500 stipend. To be paid in two installments (post band camp and upon the completion of the marching season).
