Position Summary
Reporting to the Director, Online Engagement, the Web Strategist plays a pivotal role in advancing the digital presence and communications strategy of Fordham University. This position is responsible for constructing engaging visual web page layouts that are highly optimized for both Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).
The Web Strategist will leverage a variety of digital platforms and modern UI/UX design principles to create compelling user experiences that enhance brand awareness, drive engagement, and ensure the institution’s content is widely discoverable across traditional search engines and AI-driven platforms.
This role will provide strategic guidance on website architecture, visual storytelling, web analytics, and content discoverability. Furthermore, this position will be instrumental in developing in‑house training programs to empower University Marketing and Communications staff and partners in utilizing digital design tools, SEO, and GEO best practices.
Essential Functions
Construct engaging, visually appealing, and user‑centric web page layouts that align with modern design trends and accessibility standards.
Build wireframes and collaborate with the team’s web developer to build and test in the CMS.
Develop and implement comprehensive SEO and GEO strategies to ensure university web pages rank highly on traditional search engines and AI-generated search overviews.
Work closely with the Senior Director of Online Engagement to develop on‑demand training material for university web editors focusing on visual layout best practices, SEO strategies, and AI‑driven search (GEO).
Review web analytics, search performance (Google Search Console), SEO keyword rankings, and GEO visibility to provide metric reports to clients and adjust web strategies for optimal performance.
Provide client support and training to faculty, staff, and students for CMS platforms (Terminalfour, WordPress) and web‑governance tools (SiteImprove, Brightedge), emphasizing content optimization.
Oversee and help manage the school's internal site search platform, Funnelback, optimizing search algorithms and results for user intent.
Liaise with the Creative Services team to select, crop, and resize images in Photoshop to enhance visual storytelling and overall page layout engagement.
Serve as a project manager for web design and strategy initiatives, taking ownership throughout the full lifecycle of web layout projects.
Provide technical support and guidance for various marketing technology (martech) platforms utilized by UMC, ensuring they integrate seamlessly with SEO/GEO goals.
Inform clients on best web layout practices, SEO/GEO requirements, and accessibility guidelines to ensure ADA compliance and maximum discoverability.
Actively participate in team and client meetings and remain informed on the status and progress of web strategy projects.
Oversee training and assignments for student workers related to content entry and basic search optimization tasks.
Required Qualifications
B.A. or B.S. in Web Design, Digital Communications, Computer Science, Marketing, or a related field.
Minimum of 2 years of experience in digital communications, including website management, HTML, technical support, web analytics, and Photoshop.
Knowledge of and commitment to the goals of Jesuit Education.
