Conductor

Responsibilities

Communicate information to passengers, crew members, and other railroad employees in person and via onboard communication channels.

Meeting and exceeding customer expectations by delivering great service.

Ensure compliance with all railroad and safety rules.

Ensure compliance with Federal Railroad Administrative Regulations.

Operate train doors at station stops and assist customers on and off trains as necessary.

Read, understand, and comply with bulletin orders, general orders, and other applicable rules of the Transportation Department.

Manage emergency situations such as medical emergencies, equipment breakdowns, and evacuation of passengers if necessary.

Verbally direct the movement of trains.

Provide professional customer service to passengers.

Register for duty on time.

Prepare trains for service and conduct a complete train check before and after the train has reached its final destination to ensure all passengers have disembarked.

Training Program
Conductors undergo a training program of approximately 8 weeks. The training includes classroom and field components with weekly assessments. Conductors must complete the training and obtain the required certification as mandated by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). Failure to do so may result in termination from employment.

Qualifications

18 years of age or older.

High School diploma, equivalency, or GED required.

Two (2) years of verifiable customer‑service experience in roles such as security, transportation, operations, or safety.

Availability to work various shift schedules, including up to 12‑hour shifts, weekends, holidays, and overnight shifts.

Ability to speak, read, and write English.

Maintain alertness, awareness, and vigilance at all times.

Ability to effectively and accurately understand, interpret, reference, evaluate technical and non‑technical information.

Proficient verbal and written communication skills.

Work safely and efficiently without creating threats to health and safety of self or others.

Perform continuous physical tasks for extended periods of time.

Lifting up to 40 lb; ability to push, pull, climb up the train, walk on tracks, move from car to car while the train is in motion.

Work outdoors in all types of weather.

Operate safely on uneven ground and while climbing on/off equipment in varying conditions.

Eligible to receive a Passenger Conductor Certification pursuant to C.F.R. Part 242.

Pass required pre‑employment medical exams (hearing & vision), interview panel, practical evaluation/physical agility test, background check, and drug/alcohol screening.

Excellent communication and problem‑solving skills.

Communicate with dispatchers, crew members, and the control center via radio or other communication devices.

Desired

Work experience demonstrating clear and effective verbal communication.

Ability to maintain alertness, awareness, and vigilance at all times.

Professional experience requiring initiative and responsibility; prior mechanical experience preferred.

Associate degree or technical/vocational training preferred.

Ability to work safely and act quickly in responding to emergency and non‑emergency situations.

Selection Process

Written Examination: measures knowledge of PATH procedures and rules for employees engaged in train operations, basic signals.

Oral Examination: questions designed to assess personal qualifications, knowledge of railroad operations, interpersonal and job‑related skills.

Practical Examination: measures practical skills and abilities related to conduct tasks such as climbing on/off train cars and preparing cars for operation. Qualified candidates on the practical exam will be eligible to be offered a position as they become available. Selected candidates will undergo a comprehensive background check, including review of previous DOT‑regulated employment, driver’s license history, and medical examination (hearing & vision). Participation does not guarantee an offer or a position with PATH.

Compensation & Benefits
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey & PATH Corporation offer a competitive salary and an outstanding benefits package. The starting salary for a Conductor Trainee is $33.80 per hour (subject to the collective bargaining agreement).

This position is deemed safety sensitive under the Department of Transportation (DOT) Drug and Alcohol Regulations. Locomotive Engineers and conductors are subject to drug and alcohol testing per Federal requirements, including pre‑employment, random, post‑accident/incident, and reasonable suspicion tests. DOT regulations prohibit use of medical or recreational marijuana.

PATH operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Employees may work weekends, holidays, atypical hours (evening and midnight shifts), and during inclement weather. Incumbents may be subject to mandatory overtime. A union seniority system dictates work schedules for jobs represented by one of PATH’s unions, and time off may not be immediately available during the usual summer and holiday periods. Working conditions include inclement weather, direct public contact, and industrial environments. Commitment to attendance is expected and required.
