Summary:
The Unconventional (TU) is seeking a qualified Reviewer/Editor/Certifier to support the Department of Justice (DOJ) with Translation, Interpretation, Transcription and other Linguistic Support Services (LSS). Your work will include translating written documents, electronic files, video and audio media (e.g., compact discs, .wav files), and providing court and deposition interpretation. Source material spans legal, business, public administrative, medical, scientific, financial, historical, geographical, and military terminology, requiring precise handling of specialized vocabularies.
The translator must manage materials that are legal in nature and supplied in diverse formats—electronic or hard copy books, journal articles, reports, manuscripts, letters, legal documents, memoranda, multimedia presentations, spreadsheets, emails, SMS/MMS messages, and audio or video files. Materials range from highly technical to informal, street language and textspeak, including e.g., medical and autopsy reports; chemical lab reports; financial statements; charging documents; warrants; treaties; statutes; extradition requests; and coded communications.
All the material made available to the Contractor is considered sensitive; strict confidentiality measures and controls must be maintained at all times.
Required Qualifications
Minimum of five (5) years of experience in the required language within the past ten years, with superior English and editing skills.
Qualifying scores ILR 4 minimum or equivalent on language/translation tests.
Must have lived 3 of the last 5 years in the U.S. (not required to be consecutive).
Must have at least 1 year of experience working with a law enforcement and/or legal department.
Must be a U.S. citizen.
Know both English and foreign language vocabularies used in formal, legal, diplomatic, consultative, and casual modes, including colloquial and regional slang.
Know specialized vocabulary related to the Government’s roles and missions, and possess research and analytical skills for critical terminology judgments.
Write fluently in the native language and maintain professional proficiency in English.
Translate factually and conceptually accurately without changes, omissions, or additions.
Preserve tone and register of source materials.
Abide by relevant code of linguist ethics.
Proficient in using Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools, with expertise in SDL Trados Studio.
Clearance
Active Public Trust or higher security clearance.
Location
Remote / National Capitol Region / Various CONUS Locations.
Travel
Some travel may be required.
