Johnson Service Group (JSG) is a nationally recognized professional staffing and recruiting firm that is looking for an experienced Sitework Designer 2 to fill a one‑year contract assignment in the Birmingham, AL area.
Job Summary
The position is responsible for producing civil grading design drawings for transmission projects in Alabama and Mississippi. The successful candidate will also provide support in the following areas: provide technical support and design direction to technicians; interface with other departments to assure accurate project scoping, develop best practice designs, and provide field support for transmission substation projects. Field visits and occasional overnight travel (approximately 25%) are required, and the role requires the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with reliable internet access when not in the office.
Requirements
Required PPE for field visits: hard hats, steel‑toe boots, safety glasses, hi‑vis vest
Education
High school graduate or equivalent required.
Technical training or certifications preferred.
Autodesk certification preferred.
Experience
A minimum of 5 years of experience in civil site drafting and design required.
Solid experience in grading design, erosion control design, hydrology, and storm water design is required.
Prior experience in construction estimating and construction administration is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Very experienced user of current version of AutoCAD Civil 3D.
Proficient in the design of grading, drainage, erosion control and stormwater management.
General knowledge of Federal, State, and local permitting within Alabama.
Ability to process and implement survey data to create 2D/3D surfaces and contours.
Proficient using Microsoft Office products such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Excellent organizational skills.
Good technical writing skills.
Major Job Responsibilities
Prepare layouts and conceptual design in support of lead design engineers.
Design civil projects with limited supervision for electrical substations.
Work proficiently both as part of a team and independently.
Review and evaluate the work of other group designers and drafters involved in the design of civil projects.
Develop project or task scope definitions, provide schedule input, prepare material takeoffs and assist with cost estimates.
Provide support for all construction activities related to the civil aspects of electrical substations.
Coordinate work with other internal design groups, external clients, vendors, and contractors.
Possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple projects and assignments to meet defined schedules and deliverables.
