WE CAN (Women’s Empowerment through Cape Area Networking) empowers Cape Cod women with free, confidential services that build stability, self‑sufficiency, and opportunity. Each year, WE CAN serves more than 1,500 women through legal services, employment and business support, financial empowerment, mentoring, and personal development programs.
POSITION SUMMARY
We’re seeking a Communications Manager who can help WE CAN increase awareness of our mission, programs, and impact across Cape Cod. As WE CAN celebrates its 25th anniversary and looks toward the future, this role will help shape how we tell our story, engage our community, and communicate the growing need for our services. This position combines strategic thinking with hands‑on implementation, requiring someone who can develop communications plans, create compelling content, build community visibility, and manage the day‑to‑day activities that keep our communications efforts moving forward.
The ideal candidate is a strong writer, relationship builder, and project manager who enjoys working in a collaborative environment and can translate complex issues into clear, engaging communications that connect with diverse audiences. This position offers the opportunity to play a central role in expanding awareness of WE CAN’s impact, supporting organizational growth, and helping advance opportunities for women across Cape Cod.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Communications & Marketing
Develop and implement comprehensive communications. marketing, and community engagement strategies aligned with WE CAN’s mission, program initiatives, strategic priorities, and fundraising goals.
Oversee organizational messaging, communications planning, and storytelling across digital, print, email, social media, media relations, and public‑facing materials.
Coordinate the work of external communications vendors, designers, photographers, and marketing partners as needed.
Ensure consistent messaging, strong brand identity, and alignment across all external communications channels.
Develop materials that strengthen participant, volunteer, donor and community understanding of WE CAN's mission, programs and impact.
Manage communications and marketing budgets and ensure resources are used effectively and aligned with organizational priorities.
Establish measurable goals to evaluate effectiveness of communication and engagement efforts and use data to inform future strategies.
Community Engagement & Storytelling
Manage media relations efforts, including press outreach, media partnerships, interviews, and public messaging.
Develop compelling, mission‑driven storytelling that highlights participant experiences, organizational impact, advocacy priorities, and community need.
Collaborate with program staff to ethically and effectively share participant stories and program outcomes.
Cultivate relationships with businesses, chambers of commerce, civic organizations, faith‑based organizations, media, and community stakeholders to increase community awareness, volunteer engagement, sponsorship opportunities, and philanthropic support.
Represents WE CAN at community meetings, events, and networking opportunities.
Coordinate activities that enhance awareness of WE CAN’s mission and programs and increase awareness of issues impacting women on Cape Cod and WE CAN as a trusted voice in women’s empowerment and economic mobility.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree required; relevant certifications or advanced degree preferred.
Minimum 4 years of progressively responsible experience in communications, marketing, public relations, nonprofit development, community engagement, or related fields.
Demonstrated success implementing communications and public engagement initiatives.
Experience supporting fundraising efforts such as securing corporate sponsorships, cultivating donor relationships, and grant writing preferred.
Strong understanding of branding, public relations, media relations, and integrated communications strategy.
Experience managing projects, vendors, campaigns, and multiple priorities simultaneously.
Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Excellent organizational, relationship‑building, and problem‑solving abilities.
Ability to work collaboratively across departments while exercising initiative and independent judgment.
Passion for WE CAN’s mission and commitment to supporting women’s empowerment and economic stability.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to engage empathetically and professionally with diverse stakeholders and women facing complex life challenges.
Proficiency with CRM/database systems, communications platforms, social media platforms and project management tools.
HOURS & LOCATION
This position is full‑time and exempt. Hours are generally Monday–Friday 8:30am-4:30pm, with flexibility required for occasional evening and weekend meetings, events, and community engagement activities. The position is based in Harwich Port and Hyannis offices with travel throughout Cape Cod for meetings, events, etc. Reliable transportation is required; mileage reimbursement is provided.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
The hiring range pay for this position is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
