About the Role
Working under the supervision of the Director of News and Media Relations, the Senior Editor energetically and creatively oversees copyediting and proofreading for the institution’s Office of Communications and Marketing. The position requires meticulous editorial sensibility, top‑level writing skills, and excellent organizational skills. The Senior Editor copy‑edits and proofs institutional newsletters, news releases, announcements, feature stories, web content, marketing copy, and a variety of other materials on tight deadlines. The Senior Editor also serves as the project manager and editor for online content and print publications as assigned.
Essential Duties
Editor : Deadline‑oriented copy editor and proofreader; organizes and manages content flow, coaches writers, collaborates with team members, and provides quality control through editing, proofreading, and fact‑checking.
Web and Digital Content Editing and Training : Leads editorial review of institutional web and digital content, ensures alignment with brand and accessibility guidelines, trains decentralized contributors on best practices, maintains a digital content guide, and serves as the final reviewer and approver for web content.
Project Manager : Oversees editorial content, copy editing, and timely publication; provides status updates; collaborates with writers, designers, freelancers; manages workflow of freelance copy editors and proofreaders; contributes to project reports.
Style Guide Manager : Regularly updates the institution’s style guide, informs stakeholders of changes, ensures proper use of Huntington style, and trains contributors on style and clear copy.
Writer : Serves as a backup writer, drafting high‑quality copy on deadline.
Other duties as assigned.
Candidate Requirements and Experience
Five to seven years of editing and writing experience with cultural organizations, museums, universities, and/or news outlets.
B.A. in English, journalism, or equivalent coursework preferred; demonstrated experience may substitute.
Proficient in Associated Press style; knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style is a plus.
Excellent track record of producing high‑quality editorial material on tight deadlines.
Strong project management background and proven ability to manage multiple freelance editors and proofreaders.
Exceptional attention to detail, grammar, style, and clarity; ability to write and edit quickly while supporting brand integrity.
Excellent interpersonal and coaching skills; ability to collaborate across departments.
Proficient in Microsoft Office, SharePoint, and copy‑editing software; ability to edit PDFs and online documents.
Strong organizational skills and time‑management; ability to navigate competing demands and prioritize deadlines.
Working Conditions
The role requires prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer in a normal office environment.
Compensation & Benefits
Pay Range: $85,000.00-$95,000.00, commensurate with experience.
