The Lead Technician is responsible for overseeing daily field execution of audiovisual projects while actively participating in installation, system integration, and coordination activities. This role serves as the primary field lead on assigned projects and is responsible for maintaining installation quality, productivity, communication, and adherence to company standards.
The Lead Technician acts as the bridge between the field team, Field Manager, Project Management, and Engineering. This role is expected to lead by example, maintain accountability in the field, and ensure projects progress efficiently and professionally.
The Lead Technician is not solely a working foreman position. This role includes leadership, coordination, documentation oversight, quality control, and field-level project ownership.
Field Leadership & Execution
Lead day-to-day field operations on assigned projects
Direct technicians and AV technicians on daily tasks, priorities, installation methods, and workflow
Ensure labor resources are utilized effectively
Maintain project momentum and identify risks before they impact schedule
Lead by example through professionalism, workmanship, and accountability
Oversee installation of displays, projection systems, audio systems, control systems, DSP systems, conferencing systems, and network-based AV systems
Verify installations are completed per drawings, specifications, company standards, and manufacturer requirements
Ensure installations remain clean, organized, and serviceable
Rack Build & System Integration
Oversee rack fabrication and final system integration
Verify proper wiring methods, labeling standards, cable management, and equipment layout consistency
Assist with device configuration, DSP verification, control system validation, and Dante
etwork verification
Coordinate with programmers and engineers during commissioning
Project Coordination
Coordinate directly with Field Manager, Project Manager, Engineers, Programmers, and other trades
Review project status regularly and identify material shortages, site readiness issues, schedule conflicts, and missing information
Communicate field concerns early before impacting schedule or labor
Quality Control & Standards
Maintain responsibility for field quality on assigned projects
Ensure all work meets company expectations for appearance, functionality, labeling, and documentation
Perform ongoing quality checks throughout installation
Reduce rework and punch list items through proactive oversight
Verify systems are installation-complete before requesting commissioning support
Documentation & Reporting
Ensure daily field updates are completed accurately
Verify Teams updates include progress updates, photos, redlines, and open issues
Maintain awareness of as-built changes, device changes, and cable modifications
Assist with project closeout documentation when required
Crew Development & Accountability
Mentor and train Technicians and AV Technicians
Set expectations for workmanship, productivity, professionalism, and communication
Correct installation issues and improper work methods immediately
Assist Field Manager with identifying training gaps, performance concerns, and advancement opportunities
Promote a positive and accountable work environment
Scheduling & Daily Planning
Plan daily field activities to maximize productivity
Coordinate manpower needs with Field Manager
Verify product is available, work areas are ready, and required information is available prior to starting work
Adjust field priorities as project conditions change
Testing & Troubleshooting
Lead field-level troubleshooting efforts
Verify system functionality prior to commissioning
Assist with signal flow verification, device communication, audio/video testing, and control validation
Escalate advanced programming or engineering issues appropriately
Safety & Site Compliance
Enforce OSHA and site safety requirements
Maintain organized and safe work areas
Ensure proper use of PPE, ladders, lifts, and power tools
Promote safe working habits throughout the team

Required Skills & Qualifications
Strong understanding of AV systems, signal flow, audio/video distribution, control systems, DSP systems, and basic networking
Ability to read and interpret drawings, schematics, signal flow diagrams, rack elevations, and specifications
Proven experience leading AV installations
Experience with rack fabrication, system integration, device configuration, and troubleshooting
Familiarity with Q-SYS, Extron, Dante, Shure, and AV over IP systems
Strong communication and organizational skills
