Video Research And Clearance Manager

The New York Times is continuing to expand its video journalism, identifying compelling visual stories across the depth and breadth of our report. We showcase the expertise of Times journalists on-camera, share urgent news updates, produce on-the-ground reporting, pioneering Visual Investigations, and video podcasts.
We are looking for a Video Research and Clearance Manager with deep experience in digital video production, archival research, and rights and clearances management, to work across our news video journalism efforts.
Responsibilities include sourcing third-party and user-generated video for breaking news and enterprise reporting, securing usage rights for all externally sourced video, maintaining detailed records of licenses, permissions, restrictions, and expiration dates, advising journalists and producers on permitted uses for third party and user-generated video, creating documentation and training for producers on sourcing and clearance best practices, coordinating with the Licensing team to review and facilitate the sales, syndication, and other usage of internal material, coordinating with Standards and Legal teams as needed, building and managing workflows for requesting, clearing, and tracking video rights, serving as the central point of contact for all video clearance questions in the newsroom, managing key vendor relationships, leading the negotiation of new contracts and renewals, and maintaining key documentation in the department Wiki.
Basic qualifications include 5+ years experience in video research, production, rights & clearances, or newsroom operations, demonstrated expertise in key third party providers, thorough understanding of copyright law, fair use, and licensing models.
Preferred qualifications include strong editorial judgment, ability to work calmly and collaboratively under breaking-news pressure, attention to detail, ability to clearly communicate and flag sensitive issues as needed, and strong understanding of best practices around metadata.
