Position Summary
Under general supervision, assists in planning, implementing and administration of Museum public information/education programs highlighting departmental activities and services available to the public through a variety of communications media and community resources.
Essential Functions
Confers with museum staff to obtain information and materials for the production of written and graphic materials to inform the public and support museum activities and functions.
Researches information from departmental sources, including conducting interviews and reviewing files and other written documentation.
Writes and edits news releases, feature articles, speeches, broadcast presentations, brochures, annual reports, newsletters, public service announcements and similar materials for newspapers, magazines, broadcast media and internal and external distribution.
Provides information directly to various media under specific guidelines; makes presentations to business, community and other groups to present information and answer questions.
Maintains museum’s social media presence by updating website and posting on Facebook, Twitter, etc.
Assists in implementing multi-media informational programs to publicize specific departmental activities; prepares visual presentations such as graphic displays, charts, graphs, maps, posters, photographs, camera-ready artwork and other visual materials.
Assists in planning and coordinating special events such as open houses, exhibits, tours, dedications, etc.; notifies interested parties.
Provides a variety of administrative support including researching information, producing reports, coordinating activities and providing information directly to the public.
Maintains logs and records of work performed.
May conduct facility tours and make presentations to community groups.
Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the museum’s service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.
Maintains accurate records, files and inventories of items received, displayed and shipped.
Uses standard office equipment, including a computer, hand and power tools and appropriate safety equipment, and technical, scientific and artistic tools and supplies in the course of the work.
Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with public and staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications or closely related field; AND two years of professional marketing and public relations experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.
Valid driver’s license.
Required Knowledge and Skills
Basic graphic design and printing techniques and materials, including slides and video production.
Basic techniques and procedures for dealing with the print and broadcast media. Highly creative individual who has excelled in designing visuals to support communication campaigns.
Producing effective written and graphic materials for a variety of informational and educational uses.
Assisting in implementing public relations campaigns, programs and special projects.
Using computer-aided desktop publishing hardware and software.
Maintaining accurate records of work performed.
Preparing clear and effective press releases, annual reports, newsletters, speeches, brochures, reports, correspondence and other written materials.
Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities.
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
Making effective oral presentations to large and small groups.
Organizing own work, setting priorities and meeting critical deadlines.
Training and supervising volunteers.
Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this role.
Salary and Benefits
Salary Range: $37.31-$55.96/hr DOQ. FLSA Status: Non-exempt; up to 19 hours per week. Benefits: Paid time off.
