Position Type: Full-time / Part-time

Work Hours: 35 hours per week (typically Sunday – Thursday, 3:45 p.m. – 11:15 p.m.; occasional early or extended hours up to midnight and weekend shifts during academic breaks and summer).

Job Description Summary
Nazareth University seeks a service-oriented professional to join a team of dedicated staff who work to provide library users with the resources they need for research and learning. Reporting to the Head of Circulation, this key member of the team is responsible for the overall operation of the Library Circulation Desk, providing access to library materials and information about the services, facilities and policies of Nazareth University Library. The position supervises circulation operations in the evening hours, offers high‑level customer service and expert assistance to all patrons, trains and assigns tasks to student workers, and is responsible for the security of the library building, resolving safety and security issues, and closing the building at night.

This role supports a range of library functions, including circulation, reserves, stacks maintenance, and interlibrary loan, as well as traditional circulation operations such as checking books in and out, collecting fines, registering new patrons, locating material, and providing general reference services, including assistance with databases and other web‑based resources.

*This is a staff bargaining unit position.

Essential Functions

Assists patrons in locating and accessing materials and utilizing library services.

Circulates materials internally and externally.

Demonstrates an exemplary manner in dealing with the public, including the ability to de‑escalate tense or difficult patron interactions.

Collaborates with faculty to meet their needs for service.

Maintains physical library collections and equipment, including maintenance of the stacks, assigning shelf maintenance to student assistants, and arranging and shifting collections.

Monitors Library Operations

During assigned shifts, is responsible for the operation of the Library Circulation Desk, including directing the work of student employees on shift.

Confers with appropriate parties to develop, change and implement library policies and procedures; interprets and enforces these policies.

Observes and notifies supervisor of any safety, security, or other issues; implements sound judgment in resolving issues when a supervisor is not present.

Other

Trains student assistants on computer system operation, library policies and procedures, and customer service, then trains students to assist patrons with library services.

Directs patrons to appropriate staff as requested and assists with basic reference questions as appropriate.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Experience, Technology Applications and Skills

Previous supervisory experience.

Proven ability to work independently, be self‑motivated, and manage priorities without day‑to‑day supervision.

Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to work with other members of a well‑integrated team.

Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills; must remain professional and courteous at all times.

Demonstrates commitment to working in a diverse workplace and building a pluralistic community by promoting understanding of individual differences and perspectives.

High emphasis placed on professionalism, efficiency and a positive attitude.

Annual participation in professional development focused on acquiring, improving and applying technological and other skills essential to achieving the goals of the College.

Preferred Education, Experience, Technology Applications and Skills

1–3 years of customer service experience is desirable, as is experience with computer/information technology and previous supervisory and library experience.

Experience with ALMA is a plus.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Train, assign tasks to and supervise student workers.

Physical Requirements

Manual dexterity necessary due to lifting/moving books.

Ability to lift/carry up to 20 pounds and push/pull up to 80 pounds.

Equipment to be Used

PCs, printers, scanners, copiers, alarm systems, and other electronic equipment as needed and trained.
