Senior Art Director Job at Confidential in New York

The client is seeking a Senior Art Director for its New York City office. Reporting directly to the Creative Director, the Senior Art Director will oversee approximately 15–20 luxury book projects annually, guiding work from concept through final print production. The role requires strong typographic design, visual storytelling, and an understanding of physical book construction, along with the ability to collaborate effectively with editors, publishers, production teams, and external partners. Key responsibilities include leading the creative direction and design of high-end illustrated books from concept to print, developing sophisticated typographic systems, grids, and layouts that support narrative and reinforce brand identity, and establishing visual narratives that balance imagery, pacing, white space, and hierarchy. The Senior Art Director will create and oversee templates, cover concepts, and interior architecture; maintain high precision across typography and print-related details; and instruct and mentor designers to ensure accurate execution of creative direction. The role also involves participating in client meetings, pitches, and presentations, articulating design direction and defending creative rationale. The Senior Art Director will ensure production and technical excellence by preparing and overseeing print-ready mechanicals for offset production, collaborating with printers on materials, finishes, and color accuracy, and directing in-house photo and video shoots when required. Additional duties include conducting image research and overseeing photo selection, managing file routing, archiving, and reprint updates, and ensuring projects meet deadlines while preserving design integrity. Required qualifications include 7+ years of professional experience in book publishing and print design, an advanced mastery of typography and layout systems, deep knowledge of offset printing and production processes, exceptional aesthetic judgment and attention to detail, strong communication and presentation skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects in a deadline-driven environment.
