Music
Choral repertoire is primarily drawn from the Anglican tradition and services feature plainchant, 4-part Anglican chant, 2 anthems, and service music, both congregational and choral settings. Diverse repertoire, including African-American spirituals, New World polyphony, and Villancicos, are common in St. John's liturgies. Highlights of the current 2026/27 season include a performance of Benjamin Britten's Rejoice in the Lamb and Festival Te Deum with professional soloists and chamber orchestra, and a choral residency at St. James's Cathedral in Chicago, Illinois.
St. John the Evangelist offers a musical experience grounded in the Anglican tradition and offers its staff singers flexibility needed for additional professional engagements with other ensembles and groups. Singers are paid a MINIMUM of $73 a call with elevated rates for more demanding liturgies. The program year offers roughly 95-100 calls.
Qualifications
Strong and superb musicianship, significant choral experience (preferably in the Anglican liturgical tradition), the ability to rehearse and lead sectionals as needed, warm up the full choir on Sunday mornings in the absence of the Director of Music, be a proficient sight reader and sing solo works at a high caliber, have the ability to vary vocal timbre, possess strong personable skills and work well with others, and a commitment to help uplift the church community through their gifts and dedication.
