Spy Hop Productions is a nonprofit youth media arts and education center founded in 1999, dedicated to mentoring young people in digital media arts so they can find their voice, tell their stories, and create positive change. The organization offers hands-on, project-based programs in film, music, audio, and design for youth ages 9–19 of all skill levels and aspirations. Programming is delivered in Salt Lake City and across Utah, integrating positive youth development, arts education, and career preparation. Role Description
Emma Eccles Jones KIDZ Radio Station Manager & Mentor , a founding role dedicated to building and launching our first low-power FM (LPFM) radio station from the ground up. You will be the station’s daily operator, compliance guardian, and primary teacher (mentor), working side by side with young people to create content for a broadcast audience. This is not a traditional community radio station manager role; Spy Hop provides the organizational infrastructure, and your focus will be on programming, compliance, and youth mentorship, bringing Salt Lake’s youth-led radio station to life.
In this role, you’ll help design and launch every aspect of our new LPFM station (KIDZ 92.9 FM): establishing FCC-compliant policies and workflows, setting up broadcast operations, and shaping the station’s identity and programming structure. You’ll manage FCC logs and reporting, maintain day-to-day station operations, and design and deliver youth radio curriculum that reflects Spy Hop’s youth-centered mentorship model. You’ll teach students (15-19) to produce and broadcast content that centers their voices, and collaborate with our mentor team and program leadership to integrate radio into broader youth media programming. We’re looking for someone with hands-on radio experience (ideally community or LPFM), solid FCC knowledge, basic broadcast equipment troubleshooting skills, and a deep commitment to youth-driven, asset-based mentorship. Qualifications
- 3-5 years of experience in radio broadcasting, station operations, education, youth development, and/or applicable work in after-school programming
- DJ, radio production, and/or broadcast experience; working knowledge of FCC regulations for noncommercial stations, including logging, EAS, and license compliance
- Experience with audio production software and broadcast consoles and automation software
- Genuine experience and joy in teaching or mentoring young people; experience working with youth and families from diverse backgrounds
- A builder's mindset and enthusiasm; excited to create a program that does not yet exist, comfortable with the creative process, ambiguity, and willing to be the person responsible for keeping a station on the air
- Commitment to youth development, equity, and amplifying voices that mainstream media overlooks
- Must be proficient in Word, Excel, and cloud-based applications
- Must have own transportation and a valid driver's license
- Must pass a criminal background check (required for work with minors)
Preferred
- Bachelor's Degree in related field (arts, arts education, engineering, youth development)
- SBE certification (e.g., Certified Broadcast Technologist) or equivalent technical training
- Experience at a community, college, LPFM, or educational station
- Podcast production and distribution experienceCurriculum design experience; familiarity with youth development or restorative practices
- Experience working with youth-in-care, rural, or Indigenous communities
