The Library Assistant, under the general direction of the Branch/Department Manager, assists patrons with locating and checking out materials, shelving library materials and other clerical duties. As a Library Assistant, you must demonstrate outstanding interpersonal skills, as a great part of this job will involve interacting with the local community.

Responsibilities:

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:

  1. Assist patrons with locating resources and checking out materials.
  2. Update patron records, place holds on materials and issue library cards.
  3. Responsible for shelving books and other library materials.
  4. Proactively seek out customers to help in all areas of the library (desk, roving, e-mail, phone, or additional methods of communication).
  5. Perform routine desk duties under professional supervision, help patrons locate and check out materials.
  6. Assist the public in the use of technology, including software, online tools, and mobile devices.
  7. Good listening and communication skills, present a positive attitude, enjoy working cooperatively as a team member, and prioritize customer service.
  8. Flexible to assume additional responsibilities and scheduling requirements as needed to meet the coverage needs of the public service desks in other departments.
  9. Move books, boxes, and other library equipment regularly; some materials may weigh up to 50lbs.
  10. Empty book drops daily using a mobile book cart to transport materials.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Knowledge of library amenities and the ability to provide information about library policies.
  2. Ability to use tact, courtesy and good judgement when communicating with coworkers and the public.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge, appreciation, and understanding of library materials, both print and electronic.
  4. Communicate effectively and present ideas orally and in writing.
  5. Carry out assignments independently and work collaboratively with a team.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  1. High School graduate or GED equivalent.
  2. 2-years library experience preferred, OR Associates degree or higher.
  3. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
  4. Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, with the ability to learn and use new methods and emerging technical advances.
  5. Excellent customer service skills, ability to communicate effectively with the public and library staff, and a strong work ethic.

Benefits and Compensation:

  1. Comprehensive benefits package including Paid Vacation and Sick Leave, Paid Holidays, 401k, and a Pension Plan.
  2. $16.26 per hour.
