The Associate Editor position at The Scientist is an excellent opportunity for a social media-savvy science journalist to join a dedicated team of professionals in delivering high quality news and information to our readers. The Associate Editor will assign, edit, and file articles for print and online departments; manage social media accounts; craft infographics and other instruments of multimedia story-telling; contribute to our news blog; and assemble a daily newsletter email. On occasion, there will be opportunities to report from the field and to travel to scientific conferences.

Responsibilities:

  • Produce The Scientist’s daily email newsletter
  • Manage social media accounts and develop novel initiatives on these platforms
  • Write news and feature articles for the website, magazine, and news blog
  • Assign/edit several articles each month
  • Collaborate and work within a remote based team
  • Other ad hoc projects and duties as required

Interpersonal Skills:

  • Exceptional organizational skills
  • He or she must be self-motivated and able to set priorities and meet multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment while working with minimum supervision
  • Applicants must be comfortable with reading the primary scientific literature in an array of disciplines within the life sciences and be able to communicate technical details of studies accurately and in an entertaining way
  • They should also be well versed in the issues that affect how science is conducted (including policy, funding, publishing, and cultural issues), and have an eye for enterprising stories and investigative opportunities

Experience:

  • A minimum of 3 years of reporting and/or editing experience, preferably on life science beat
  • Experience in developing, populating, and managing social media platforms for a news outlet and assessing reach/engagement and other metrics of performance

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in science required
  • An advanced degree—in life science or journalism—desirable

Technical Skills:

  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Top-notch news judgment
  • Knowledge of web technologies (SEO, HTML, and analytics)
  • Social media savvy
